"We’ll be prepared, if we feel that we weren’t going to be able to sign Ryan, and if we thought we were in a position that we had to or should trade him. I’m certainly hoping that doesn’t happen, I don’t want that to happen, but I want to be prepared for that."

David Poile discusses Ryan Suter’s contract with Josh Cooper. I'm not trying to be Debby Downer, but this situation hasn't gotten any better since I wrote about it a month ago.

I am hoping this is just a tactic for Poile to speed up the conversation.

That’s exactly what this is. Not time to panic. But also not a good sign. I’m preparing for life without the two defensemen. Not the end of the world. They’re home-grown assets. As long as we can get something decent in return …

by el pucko on Jan 10, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

We have a month and change.

I believe that is plenty of time. Poile is playing with all of us, and he will probably sign Suter tomorrow. :)

Suter to the Jackets for Nash…. that would show him

by Creeping Death on Jan 9, 2012 5:25 PM EST reply actions

Do we really need Nash running over Rinne in practice as well?

by Predmonton on Jan 9, 2012 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Suter for Parise?

I don’t want to lose Suter but maybe that would convince Weber that the Preds are serious. We can’t lose both and we need something huge in return.

by Catwoman on Jan 9, 2012 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I think the Devils would have to offer something more than just Parise, since his knee is a liability and since it is hard to find a d-man of Suter’s caliber on the block. Don’t get me wrong Parise is a beast…I am just saying that Suter is worth a lot.

by Predmonton on Jan 9, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Unless you also have a signing ceremony for Parise, trading for him will only get you his services for the rest of this season. That won’t do much to convince Weber of anything.

Man it has been a tough year to be a Preds fan…thank goodness they have a decent record. I might cry if Suter leaves, although I probably would also cry, tears of joy, if Parise signed with the Preds. I am just hoping Poile still has some tricks up his sleeve.

I’m sure there’s a Dustin Boyd somewhere up Poile’s sleeve. :/

I would love Rick Nash. It makes perfect sense for him to play here and he is already signed long term. No way they do the deal without a contract signed for years by Suter, so it won’t happen.

Nash's cap hit

These are Nash’s numbers. With a no trade clause that he said he would waive. Would be nice, but I don’t see it happening.

Cap Hit: $7.8 million.
2011-12: $7.5 million.
2012-13: $7.6 million.
2013-14: $7.8 million.
2014-15: $7.9 million.
2015-16: $7.9 million.
2016-17: $8 million.
2017-18: $8.2 million.

I don't know how everyone else feels but

I feel that Weber and Suter have both tied the hands Poile the last 7 months. If they wanted to sign and be here long term they would have done it like Rinne did. Sure Rinne got alot of money and years but he showed his commitment to this team. If Weber had signed last Summer, with Rinne contract Poile could have already made a move to bring in some help. These guys are becoming distraction when “if” they wanted to be here they both would have already signed.

by Preds74 on Jan 9, 2012 8:07 PM EST reply actions

Suter and Weber

These guys want to see the team improve and challenge for the Cup. It’s management that has done nothing to add scoring to a boring lineup of average forwards. Both Suter and Weber bust it every night and Shea is the teams leading scorer! We have some young D assets to trade and let’s hope DP can pull something together to convince these two future Hall Of Fame players to stay. If they leave this team won’t sniff the playoffs for years to come!

by virgil trucks on Jan 9, 2012 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

However

Until these guys are signed and Poile knows for how long and how much money he can’t go out and get any top six forward. Like I said if these really wanted to stay they would have signed so Poile could improve the team by at least the tradeline. I am starting to loss respect for both of these guys. If Weber wanted to leave he should have done it last Summer, if Suter wants to leave trade him by the deadline and bring in a top forward. Fans can go with Web/Sut wants to see improvement but until your two top players are locked in it is hard build anything longterm with anyone else.

by Preds74 on Jan 9, 2012 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

They didn’t bust it in the Dallas game, where they were both a -2. These guys have off nights, occasionally.

The “they tied Poile’s hands” argument has been dealt with numerous times before. The money it will cost to keep them is a known factor within 1M in either direction, so it has little interference with what Poile can do elsewhere with the roster.

Defense keeps you in games........offense wins them!

by Grizzledbear on Jan 9, 2012 8:44 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I respectfully disagree

No gm can build a team until their top players are signed and usually they want them signed longterm 3 plus years. We all know that the three will cost at least 21 million a year however, until the contracts are signed and Poile knows how much each season plus years he can’t negotiate any contract to any top 3 forward. He could however go out and sign guys to 2 to 3 million a season but that type of forward is not what we need.

by Preds74 on Jan 9, 2012 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

I respectfully disagree with your disagreement.

In a sense, our situation is better than it is for a team that is unsure what it will cost to sign a certain player or players. We know what it will cost to sign Weber and Suter within a fairly certain financial framework, so we know how much money will be left over (if any) for another player that we need. It’s actually a pretty cut and dry situation for the organization in terms of the finacial aspect, it’s the “will RS and SW re-sign with us” part that is cloudy.

by Grizzledbear on Jan 10, 2012 1:06 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

In your opinion

Who’s is currently available as a return for either Suter or Weber? I’m not in any way asking because my other team is in rebuild mode. That didn’t occur to me at all. o.o

R.I.P. Belak, Rypien, Boogaard, Lokomotiv.

I’m thinking Stamkos is probably available. :p

As I’ve said, I think it’s more likely that it will be picks/prospects that we could get for them, simply because a Cup contender doesn’t want to send away a key part of their team in a trade and a non-contender isn’t going to trade for a guy who will leave after the season is over. It’s a tougher trade situation than some may think.

Picks and prospects for either of those guys is a bad, bad deal. I’d do it if that was the only thing I could get for Suter before he walked, but no way for Weber with one more year as an RFA.

That’s why, as I’ve mentioned before, my preference would be to just go all in for the Cup this season with both Suter and Weber on board. It may be the one time we’ll have a chance to do so in the next 3 or 4 years.

The one positive, if there is one if either or both of them leave, is that we’ll have a lot of money to spend on free agents or trade acquisitions if they do leave.

Defense keeps you in games........offense wins them!

by Grizzledbear on Jan 10, 2012 3:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I understand that

but as Poile, Trotz and even Cigarran stated at the Skate of the Union and several times since. “That their goal is to sign all three to long-term contracts”. Now you know as well as everyone that Poile can’t do anything “big” until he knows what these two are going to do. Sure they know a general idea of what these will cost but they don’t have any idea the terms/years/exact amount of the contract and until these guys are signed Poile can’t make a necessary move. That is why I lay almost full blame on Weber for last Summer and now Suter is following in his steps. All anyone has to do is look at Rinne, how many of us even knew that Rinne was even close to being signed. He said he wanted to be here, he wanted to play for the Predators long-term and that is exactly what he did. To me Rinne has made himself more of “hero” role model than Weber or Suter. Just my opinion but that is how I feel.

by Preds74 on Jan 10, 2012 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Every team has players they need/want to sign long term.

If what you’re proposing here were correct, almost no team would ever be able to make any significant moves. It’s not difficult to figure what the cost and even, within a few years, the length of the contracts Suter or Weber would get if they stayed here, so Poile knows within a reasonably accurate framework what he can do with whatever additional resources he has to work with. As I said before, it’s actually a pretty clear situation as far as the money aspect of it goes.

by Grizzledbear on Jan 10, 2012 11:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

But if we don’t resign them, we need replacements for them, not just a forward, right? So in a sense, even knowing the price for them, doesn’t really help Poile decide what to do.

Sure it does!

If either or both of our big Dmen were to leave here, that free’s up the money that was allocated to re-sign them. You can get some decent players in this league for the 15M or so that Weber and Suter would be getting paid.

Concur wholeheartedly. No shame there. You’re merely sayin’ it like you sees it, Dirk:

Now I shall say it and by all means laugh/guffaw all you like. But here ’tis: Webs & Sutes have a brotherly blood pact. They will stay and go together. Winning is sweeter together. Losing is half as bad. Just look at how they lean over other guys for strategic coffee talk on the bench. Any GM with half a zombie-eaten brain knows this. Separate them at your own risk. Do what thou wilt to keep them together.

But what do I know, right? WHAT. DO. I. KNOW? Champagne wishes and caviar dreams. Tick tock.

Players like Suter and Weber want to be on a team that has a really good shot at the Stanley. I think that if Poile can’t convince them that he is willing to find the players that can make that happen, then they don’t want to be here, and I can’t fault them for that. They are awesome players and don’t need to spend their careers on a team that can’t get passed the first round most seasons. jmo

All in all

We need and want both Suter and Weber. Anyone can say what they want. Not getting this deal done is a negative thing for the team. Especially when we have so many youngsters that are relying on the two veterans outcome. This whole team has to be stressing the fact they could be gone tomorrow. Both sides need to work to get it done.
