Monday's notes: St. Louis gets an offensive boost with McDonald's return

A major personnel move has the potential to make a big difference in the NHL's Central Division, and it has nothing to do with the trade market. In St. Louis, the Blues last night welcomed forward Andy McDonald back after a 4-month absence due to a concussion. As a player who has put up nearly point-per-game production in recent seasons, can he provide the spark to lift the Blues' 22nd-ranked attack?

All this and a lot, lot more after the jump!

Nice to see some insight. I never knew he was such good friends with 6/20 at the time. I don’t like his recklessness, but he may be what gets them to sign?

I know what you mean. There were lots of good bits of info in that piece, like the friendships with Shea and Ryan. Regardless of whether he returns at all, it’s worth reading.

loved the article, trying to temper my hopes a bit

He would be better than anything that we could realistically pull in via a trade. And if he has to clear waivers to rejoin the preds (no way in hell does he go thru waivers unclaimed), then there is clearly a gaping hole in the CBA. We would get screwed in the worst way. The NHL should make him honor his contract, but that would probably piss off the other 29 owners, which sucks because this offseason will be a bargaining one…

Apparently, Radulov is the only one who doesn’t have to clear waivers.

Timing may be the challenge

It looks like the KHL playoffs start in late Feb but continue thru most of April. Does he have to be here by the trade deadline to play in the playoffs? SInce he is under contract, does that not apply?

by Catwoman on Feb 13, 2012 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

I think if we can convince Radulov to come back it has to help us resign 6/20. That move would show that we are serious about contending

Rads

has the mentality of an eccentric goalie, which would not be a discussion at all, just comparisons to Eddie Belfour and Patrick Roy….boundless emotion and reckless abandon is something these preds NEED. absolutey, go get him.

He reveled in a pair of Predators goals nine seconds apart in Game Three with such an explosion of emotion that he knocked then-captain Jason Arnott, who scored the second, off balance so that Arnott’s face hit the boards in front of the bench.

Boclair has completely lost it. IN FRONT OF THE BENCH? FACE HIT THE BOARDS? Jeez, David, pull up the YouTube clip. Check your failing memory.

Now, rewatching the clip, HERE, I am going to say, I think for the first time, that Arnott gives himself a concussion. He jumps into the glass, face-first, at 1:37. A second later, Radulov jumps on him, wraps his arm around Arnott’s neck and, if you watch closely, Arnott’s head never contacts the boards on his way down. In fact, it looks like Radulov’s arm STOPS Arnott’s head from hitting the boards. At 1:59 of the video, Arnott is on the bench, and he palms the front of his head, as if in pain. I have joked in the past about Radulov giving Arnott a concussion, but I never blamed him for it, as it was a celebratory accident. Now, it seems clear, to me, that Rads didn’t even do it.

it sure looks to me like when Radulov jumps into Arnott, the back of his head hits the dasher on the way down.

1. It would be 10 tons of awesome to drop Radulov into this lineup, but until he shows up here, I’m not getting worked up over it.
2. I still do have questions about that waiver status. I know what the Preds say, but I’m trying to get clarification from the NHL itself. If I were the St. Louis Blues, I’d fight like hell over this, recalling the Svatos incident from last year.
3. The buddies angle with Suter & Weber was interesting. I wonder why we didn’t really hear about that before? Or did we, and I’m mis-remembering?

When would the KHL season’s playoffs end, if it went seven games in the G cup? Would you know the date then?

Plus, like you have written, said, preached a million times the past two years the Waiver status issue is huge. I know we all will be interested to know if the NHL would respond to you on this.

Other than the early flub over the site of Arnott’s concussion, it is one of Boclair’s better columns of recent memory, as far as the amount of information conveyed.

Radulov contract

- Rinne is signed for 7 yrs, $7M cap hit per year
- if we sign both Suter and Weber, it will be for at least 7 yrs and $7M-$8.5 per year each
- if Rads fulfills the last year of his contract, he will be a RFA. He’s worth at least $7M per year and would want a long term contract.

Can we afford to sign all of them? That’s at least $29M for 4 players. Is there enough money to sign 19 other players and stay under the cap (forget about cap mid point for revenue sharing)? Is there too much risk in signing 4 players to 7+ year contracts…think Rick DiPietro?

by Griz-ATL on Feb 13, 2012 1:02 PM EST reply actions

I think the new CBA will answer a lot of those questions perhaps. Under the current agreement I think that will be a major stretch the way things are set up now. Keep in mind as a RFA we will be entitled to some compensation if he gets an offer sheet. However, if we don’t have the dough anyway most clubs would be fine with waiting and picking him up for nothing.

by 901predfan on Feb 13, 2012 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, he could help with a Cup run. Then, he can be traded if necessary as an RFA. Or maybe Suter will bolt. But I think Rads is making $4-5mil in the KHL. He might sign for $5.5 or so?

by 901predfan on Feb 13, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

IMHO I think Rads would only get about 5 million a year tops..

But even if he does get 7 a year & we tie up $29 million a year for 4 players, will it really matter?.. Maybe, maybe not, no one knows.. Im a FIRM BELIEVER that if we had those 4 signed for 5 to 7 years that we could have 19 tootoo & smithsons & BE FINE.. Just my opinion though.. I could see why people would be worried about that though..

by TN-Stick on Feb 13, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Could there be a bit a truth to Rads return? Could that be why GMDP has not made any trade noises? How sure are we that Rads team is going to the playoffs? He has a couple of Gagarin Cups already could a Stanley Cup have more appeal?

His team is 2nd in their division. No idea whether they also have conferences, but I assume 2nd in the division would be adequate for the playoffs.

by LuvthePreds on Feb 13, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

This part is intriguing....

According to Poile, if he plays just one regular-season game, he satisfies the remaining year of his contract, which sends him into the ensuing offseason as a restricted free agent.

Yeah, it's halftime America... and our second half is about to begin.

by djzielin on Feb 13, 2012 2:01 PM EST reply actions

If that is true, and the waiver mumbo-jumbo gets settled and recitified, it behooves Radulov to come back this season to get his pay day next. I know if is wishful thinking, but here’s to his KHL team getting swept in the playoffs and him coming back in time to help our cause.

by 901predfan on Feb 13, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

I read that too and it was also pretty clear that Radulov knows that. Given his previous loyalty, would he jump ship from his KHL team before the playoffs are over?

by Catwoman on Feb 13, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

wow, not that is another can of worms to consider, especially in light of the MOU between the NHL and KHL. Is he even a part of that because of his contract being signed before that agreement? Would we even take him if that were an option? I say yes. However, would going the low down route be supported by the NHL, especially with this waiver buisness. I would say they would not be helpful if it was causing a break in the MOU between the leagues. Even though we were the party who got screwed in the first place.

If that scenario came up there will be more lawyers on it then white on rice. Billable hours baby!!!

by 901predfan on Feb 13, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Amnesty clause seems like a bad idea, esp. for smaller market teams

Seems like it would just encourage the clubs with unlimited funds to offer even more outrageous contracts than they already do. If the only thing constraining their spending is cap space (and not actual dollars) then they can afford to whiff on even a huge contract, knowing it can be bought out later and not hurt their cap numbers. This would almost certainly drive up the cost of signing superstar players and probably as a consequence drive of the cost of all players in general. Seems like the players are the ones who should want this (there really isn’t a major downside for them – they already can be bought out, albeit with cap consequences). It is the small market teams who will suffer most. I think this would would significantly affect the parity that the salary cap was supposed to ceate.

by Popov on Feb 13, 2012 2:50 PM EST reply actions

I agree. If they are encouraged to grow the game overall, they will get more money from revenue sharing. That’s a win-win and it should help keep salaries down.

It’s not just the small markets that would suffer…the smart teams would suffer too — those teams that made smart decisions and didn’t sign any of these stupid contracts.

That story on rads

Really is a great read an gives an interesting insight on his personality and how he wasnt a lone gun like its been made to look like. I wasnt huge into hockey like i am now when this all happened so i never paid attention to it. But if the truth is there that he and suter and weber were that close it might help get him back. Now as far as his celebrations im fine with that just keep putting it in the net or helping put it there. The waiver thing is interesting because for any other player coming over here they would have to clear waivers but rads is the only one still under contract with a team in this league so he may not have to, we really dont know until we try. As for the rest about the team accepting him back most all the guys on the team except for a handful of guys (webs suts toots smithson leggy and marty) were here when he was so i dint see that being a problem.
Think of him on a line with wilson and hb…
