Tuesday afternoon notes: Hockey Hubris in Nashville?

Photo

Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz often shows respect for the hockey gods, expressing his patience that if teams and players treat the game right, the proper results will eventually come through.

So what the heck is the team doing, posting a sign in the arena which lauds the "Stanley Cup champion Nashville Predators"?

Some seriously bad karma is emanating from this picture shared by Josh Cooper this afternoon. Yes, I know it's an expression of the vision which the team would like to achieve, but following this logic they should paint murals on the concourse showing Shea Weber hoisting the Stanley Cup.

Says, "One Goal"

Isn’t that just a posting of their mission statement? I’m not sure there’s “lauding” going on.

Yea, I think it's something to remember to reach for.

That’s cool though, in a way (if slightly tempting to the hockey gods…), because it definitely sends a loud and clear message about what we hope to achieve here in Nashville.

I don’t say the “S” word so as not to jinx my goalies. I don’t say the “H” word so as not to jinx goal scorers. I have a lucky T-shirt and a game-time routine.

Players don’t touch the Cup unless they’ve won it. They often refuse to touch the conference trophies before the Final.

Call me superstitious. I am superstitious, but that sign gives me the willies.

Has anyone seen the video of Def Leppard putting the Cup upside down on the stage at Joe Louis after they won it? Pretty hilarious. I guess that eliminates them from ever winning another Stanley Cup!

clarification

Def Leppard didn’t win the Cup, the Red Wings did.

this was during a promo before the game. and I believe the Penguins won that year.

Yeah, it's halftime America... and our second half is about to begin.

Just a mission statement.. really.

it’s a mission statement that we’ve heard how many times from Cigarran? Much ado about nothing really.

Except it’s not really presented that way, is it? I’ve heard Cigarran say that as well, as in “our goal is to become…”. That’s not at all the way this sign is worded, though.

Like I said, why not start putting up murals of Shea hoisting the Cup while they’re at it?

Hubris - one of my favorite words!

I agree that this sign is misleading, a bad omen and in poor taste. And I’m an unabashed authority on all things that taste bad. :) But what continues to bother me is the whole “Spinal Tap first and Puppet Show second” issue: When will the Preds finally get the headline over Bridgestone Arena? Most hockey towns could care less about the awesomeness factor of THE ARENAs. They care about the hockey, not about the venue. Who cares if Andrew Dice Clay sells out Bridgestone for a week? Although that might taste even worse than this ad…

A good goal that could use a little rephrasing. A suggestion:

“Our ONEGOAL is to make Bridgestone Arena the #1 sports and entertainment venue in the United States with its centerpiece the Stanley Cup winning Nashville Predators hockey team.”

Clearly a vision of the future, not a present tense statement projected into the future.

To set goals, you want them posted where they can be seen to be reinforced in the mind. Look at the bottom. ONEGOAL. Its is a goal of the team and franchise. Don’t see the issue.

Try setting goals in your personal life and post where you will see them everyday(Office, room, etc). I promise you, you will fulfill them more than you would if they just stayed in your mind.

the sign of doom??

Good Lord! Hockey players are the most superstitious professional athletes on the planet! Is this the owners way of guaranteeing a good excuse for not making it to the finals? What kind of mojo and hex removing are we going to have to do to fix this?! The Red Sox back in the late 70’s paid a witch doctor to put a spell on the Orioles. Maybe we need some kind of blessing now.
