Nashville Predators announce contract extensions for David Poile & Paul Fenton
The Nashville Predators have locked down their front office leadership for three more seasons, with an announcement today that general manager David Poile and assistant GM Paul Fenton have signed extensions, with Poile's through the 2014-2015 season (the length of Fenton's isn't specified). If I recall correctly, Poile had been operating on a series of one-year agreements ever since the ownership change in 2007, so this marks a significant commitment on behalf of both sides to keep the same gameplan in place going forward.
Obviously, Nashville's "draft and develop" model has delivered impressive results over the last several years, as the team has consistently qualified for the playoffs despite usually sporting one of the lowest payrolls in the league.
In particular, locking up Paul Fenton is as essential as Poile. As general manager of the Milwaukee Admirals and overseer of the team's Entry Draft, he's the one responsible for driving the acquisition and development of young talent on a day-to-day basis. It's widely expected that at some point he'll run an NHL team of his own, but Preds fans should be happy to keep him here for a while longer.
An excerpt from the team's statement follows...
The only General Manager in franchise history and the only one to be a finalist for the NHL GM of the Year Award in each of the last two seasons, David Poile, has been awarded a contract through the 2014-15 season, announced Predators' Chairman Tom Cigarran today. Poile also announced an extension of Assistant General Manager Paul Fenton.
"Today's announcement is further recognition by the Predators' ownership group of the outstanding job David has done as President of Hockey Operations since the franchise's inception," Cigarran said. "The consistent success of the Predators on the ice is directly attributed to his ability to assemble and lead a team of management, coaches, scouts and administrators who continually identify, draft, develop and motive an exceptional group of experienced and young players. The ownership group believes that under his leadership, the Nashville Predators will soon achieve its goal of winning the Stanley Cup."
Poile's Predators team is bidding for its seventh playoff berth in the last eight seasons. The Predators are one of just six teams to have qualified for the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons, having been a model of consistency in winning 40 or more games in each of the previous six seasons. Also, the Predators' top affiliate, the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals, are the first team in AHL history to win 40 or more games and total 90 or more points in eight consecutive seasons while en route to nine straight playoff berths.
The current Predators roster includes 15 players drafted and developed by the Predators, four acquired via trade, three free agents and two selected via waivers.
Under Poile's direction and philosophy, the Hockey Department has been marked by excellence, stability and consistency; Fenton has been with the organization since 1998, Head Coach Barry Trotz is the only head coach in franchise history, Goaltending Coach Mitch Korn has been with the club since 1998 and Hockey Operations Advisor Brent Peterson has been a part of the organization for all 14 years.
In NHL history, Poile now stands third on the all-time General Managers list for games won (1,049 entering this season) and he will move into second place on the all-time GM list for games (2,235) on March 17, when he will pass Harry Sinden and be only behind Glen Sather.
A 2001 Lester Patrick Award winner for contributions to hockey in the United States, Poile also served as Associate General Manager on USA's Silver Medal-winning Olympic Team in 2010 and he continues to serve on the NHL's Competition Committee.
Now in his sixth season as assistant GM, after serving as the franchise's director of player personnel for its first eight campaigns, Fenton has been instrumental in bringing in many of Nashville's core players, primarily through the draft, but also through trades and free agent signings.
"I appreciate ownership's support and, as importantly, ownership's commitment to building a Stanley Cup winner here in Nashville," Poile said. "We are in our Window of Opportunity and I look forward to working with ownership, our staff and players to reach our goals.
"Paul's vast experience in the game, from playing at the NHL level to scouting and evaluation, combine to make him an integral and invaluable member of our organization. We're thrilled that he will continue to play a key role in our hockey operations."
In addition to overseeing the Predators' amateur player development and managing the team's professional and amateur scouting staff, Fenton serves as general manager of the Milwaukee Admirals and helps head up Nashville's efforts at the annual Entry Draft. He also served as Associate GM for Team USA at the 2011 World Championships.
Fenton joined the Predators after spending five seasons in the Anaheim Ducks' hockey operations department. Prior to joining the Ducks, Fenton played eight seasons in the NHL, amassing 100 goals and 83 assists in 411 contests.

If they trade with us
they will be getting from us. I don’t think they won’t trade with us just because we’re in the same division. They won’t trade with us because we won’t give them what they want.
That might be the best Android-reply-fail I've ever seen.
And I’ve had quite a few good ones. Congratulations, haha.

Yay! I approve of this.
NO MOAR FIRING GMDP!
Also, Poile, if you have finally found The One, please please please make that trade ASAP. Thanks!

Maybe he will. Or not.

But seriously, I think this is a good sign for stability of the franchise for now. We’ll see what he can do on improving the team for the stretch run.
Seems like a lot of pieces are being locked in though: Poile, Fenton, Korn early in the year, the relationship with the Ads, etc.

Yep. Wasn’t that Mitch Korn contract just a one-year deal? With Pekka signed long term, do you think that would make him want to sign a multi-year deal also?
yes!
On the no more fire gmdp. Who would you replace him with seriously? But on the trade it looks like hemsky is our target

I haven't the slightest idea...
I’m sure lots of teams think their GM is the best, but I seriously think Poile is one of the best GMs in the entire league. He’s had some bad moments, but he IS a human being… and human beings DO occasionally make decisions that turn out to be bad… what can you do? Overall, though, he’s been able to work (and work very successfully) with a fantastically low budget for the past however-many-years, while still getting the Predators players who produce (not to mention the ignored/unwanted/underrated players who then magically get their sh*t together). He does a wonderful job drafting (he is a little heavy on Dmen – what can you do; he DID get us Weber, Suter, and Klein…. and then he ALSO got us Wilson, Horny, and HB…). He also seems to be the milk to Trotz’s cookie, and you can’t argue with food analogies OR delicious chemistry (see what I did there?) of that caliber.
Also, I think I’d be okay with Hemsky. Assuming he can stay healthy, he seems like he’d be a great addition.

I tried to read your Kostitsyn article. I will lie and say I read the whole thing. (At least most of it…. ok I skimmed it)
Hello. My name is Bob and I do not know the Beatles.
Haha, no worries :) I hope you found the parts you skimmed interesting!
I actually had a hard time setting that article up, so I’m okay with how it’s written, but not thrilled. Once I noticed that Tits disappeared for the entire play, I wanted to share because it was just so weird. Deciding how to best go about it was hard though, especially because I wanted to look at it in the context of the entire play. So that being said, it ended up being longer than I wanted, and by the end I was just like, “Screw it! I’m finished!” Haha.

good for GMDP
This guy has more magic up his sleve then pekka. I saw that cause he consistantly proves the league and canada wrong. Every year they say we cant do it with our payroll. Well playoffs 6 of the last 7 and more to come. Could you imagin if we win the cup this year with the lowest payroll in the league?! Everytime we question something he says or does we get proven wrong and shown that he is working his plan and clearly its a successful one and i for one can not wait to see what happens

In a related development
longtime Predators corporate sponsor Dex Imaging has agreed to provide emergency maintenance support for any operational issues with Mr. Poile’s fax machine.
It’s great to know GMDP and Paul Fenton will be on task for three more years!

It seems the fan base is split 50/50 on whether the Preds should go after Jeff Carter or if they should go after someone else(Hemsky?). The big worry seems to be that Carter has 10 years left on his contract but don’t you think that the Preds would be better off using their assets to get a locked up player rather than another rental? I love the Hal Gill pickup, especially since Geoffrion had more value to Montreal than any other team, and Gill can really help the team both on and off the ice. I heard a rumor that Montreal might be interested in Hali + 3rd for AK but that seems like a bad deal for the Preds for just another rental player. Just wanted to see what everyone thought about the use of the Predators assets to pick up another rental player vs. picking up a guy with years left on his contract.
#barterforcarter
IMHO, I don't think us wanting Carter is necessarily relevant...
I don’t think Columbus would even be willing to give us Carter. They could get a lot back for him, yeah, but if we get him, they have to play against him 6 times a year for the next 10 years. I really doubt they want to do that, but that’s just my opinion. Also, I don’t like the length of that contract. If we get stuck with it and he ends up not being what we want/need, getting rid of him is gonna be reeeeally hard.
I see what you’re saying about rentals vs. contract guys, though. I don’t like the idea of giving up a bunch of stuff for someone who very well might leave the next year. However, I think if we pick up a rental and do extremely well in the playoffs with him, he’s gonna be more willing to resign. I dunno. This has a “damned if you do-damned if you don’t” feel to it (stuck with a big contract (maybe) or the guy jets out of Nashville).

I understand the argument about Columbus not wanting to trade Carter in their own division, but it’s not like they beat the Preds anyways. If they are looking to get rid of Carter and Nash, they probably wouldn’t be a playoff team in the next 5-8 years anyways so why not get a lot for him while they can. Even if they were to trade Carter or Nash inside the conference, they would still be playing against them 4 times a seasons so the only real difference would be if they shipped either of them out to the East. I wouldn’t mind having a player capable of 40+ goals/season for the next 10 years. At the very least, Carter would still be the greatest goal-scoring forward on the team. Considering the most goals ever scored by a pred was 33 by Arnott, a player like Carter would be the threat the Predators have never had and add a whole new dimension to the team (think playoffs especially). I’m sure it would be easier to get Radulov back too if the Preds could get a player like Carter and lock up Suter and Weber. That team would be downright scary!
I agree with CAustin on the idea that getting a player with years remaining on a contract would truly show Weber and Suter that the organization is looking to be a contender for years to come. Getting another rental player screams “lets go all in and pray we can go deep in the playoffs and convince Suter and Weber to sign long-term” which sounds like a terrible idea to me considering the available rental players left. Nothing would be worse than spending valuable assets to get rental players and then fall short in the playoffs and potentially lose Suter and in-turn Weber. Would you like to see the Preds have to play against Suter and/or Weber 6 times a year with the Red Wings?
I see your point. I really do. I am just so skeptical of Carter happening. And yes, I would prefer to get a long-term contract guy for all the reasons you mentioned, but I think finding someone between the lines of “way too long” and “UFA” is going to be extremely hard. Also, it depends on your definition of “way too long”… some people aren’t bothered by Carter’s 10 year contract, but others are. I fall into the later category. I want a long-term guy, but 10 years is a BIG commitment. I dunno. It’s all so up in the air. Blegh. I just want something to happen so we can all stop freaking out about what might or could happen, and just get on with our new players and the rest of the season!

I prefer someone who’ll stick around, if the team is going to give up assets. Two reasons: 1. Losing sucks but it’s even worse once you’ve experienced some success. 2. A contributor who’ll be here for at least a couple of years is more likely to convince Suter/Weber to commit than someone who’ll go elsewhere over the summer. More expensive, probably, but more potential for real, long-term success.

I agree. I think the difficulty that comes with that, however, is finding someone with a long-term contract, but a long-term contract that isn’t absolutely terrifying (Carter).

If it were easy everyone would do it. :)
I don’t know what kind of deal Poile can manage to swing. I hope he’s thinking further ahead than May. But he may only be able to get a rental. We’ll just have to wait and see, and we’ll just have to hope whatever he gets it’s at a price we can live with.

Great news
Poile has done a great job here in Nashville and our stable management is our strongest asset. People around the NHL have noticed how we are doing things and more and more they are focusing on scouting and development. The Nashville Way works!
