Blues 3, Predators 2: St. Louis wins in a shootout
The Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues played a wildly entertaining, close contest tonight at Bridgestone Arena, with the Blues getting their first win this season over Nashville, 3-2 after a shootout. The win widens the Blues' lead over the Preds for 4th place in the West to four points, with each team having 21 games remaining.
Video highlights and post-game reaction from this one follow after the jump:
Cue the video (might take 30-45 minutes post-game to work):
We've got loads of post-game audio from this one:
Predators Blues highlights 2012-02-23 (mp3)
Ryan Suter post-game 2012-02-23 (mp3)
Roman Josi intermission 2012-02-23 (mp3)
Rob Vollman pregame 2012-02-23 (mp3)
And from the post-game media scrum, there's Sergei Kostitsyn, Roman Josi, Colin Wilson, and Barry Trotz. Just click each name for the mp3.
Your random observations:
- Boy, that first period wasn't exactly one for the scrapbook, was it? Let's move on...
- We saw the give and take which comes with rookies in the second period with Roman Josi. He jumps into a rush nicely and finishes off the 2-on-1 with Brandon Yip, but later on makes a poor choice when trying to clear the puck up the boards, turning it over and leading to the Blues' second goal.
- Then Darren Dreger broke word that Dustin Brown might actually be available in L.A., and I pretty much lost focus on the game after that.
- Wilson's backhander reminded me of the goal he scored at Dallas a couple games ago.
- By all accounts, it sounds like the Preds didn't recognize Arnott's return during the game. Personally, I think that's pretty poor.

Man that was hella depressing
The team came out flat, the crowd never seemed to get into the game at all and we gave up 2 lucky/bad goals. Tonight just never felt right from the get go and man did we miss some really chances. Should of have gained 2 points and yet end the end were down another. dang.

Dustin Brown
What’s it take to get him? Is LA looking for another D-Man now? Looks like he’s under contract through ‘13-’14 too.
sounds like a tough loss
But plus side is wilson seems to have his scoring touch. Josi is learning but everything ive seen tells me he will be very good.

Somebody educate me please
why on earth would the Kings, who have so much trouble scoring but excel on defense, trade Dustin Brown? Jeff Carter notwithstanding, makes no sense to me.

I thought the same thing
but it makes sense if Lombardi is thinking Suter + for Brown. It would also prove once and for all that Lombardi is an idiot.
In the name of the Pekka, the Rinne, and the Holy Octopus. Amen.
They appear to be just under the cap. Carrying only 6 d-men and 17 forwards, I can see where they might want to move a forward, but there are others I would think they would move before Brown.

Would not mind taking Stoll or J. Williams off their hands.
But I will play along:
Brown and Nolan for Ellis, Mueller, K. Wilson, Budish, and a 2nd.
by wrandsw on Feb 24, 2012 1:56 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I would prefer Brown for Blum and a 1st considering a: they don’t have a pick in the first 3 rounds if CBJ gets their 1st this year, b: Blum is a SoCal native, c: Blum’s salary is negligible, and d: Blum could be a 7th defenseman for them if needed.
In the name of the Pekka, the Rinne, and the Holy Octopus. Amen.
Give them the kitchen sink too, while you’re at it. Are we going to have any prospects left?
"We want to keep beating them...to break their pride and break their season...is a huge thing for us." - David Legwand
Of the guys I listed ellis is the only top level prospect. Budish can possibly become top level but isn’t there yet and if they throw in Nolan then it doesn’t matter if we lose Budish.
We can afford to lose Mueller and k. Wilson.

Uncle Bob alluded to “culture change” as one reason to move the captain, as opposed to an older forward.
I love the fact
That we have gritty hard working forwards. We score by committee, and our style or play really suites the playoffs.
That being said…
None of our forwards have a real scoring touch. We can’t score in the shootout to save our lives it seems. We started off fairly well this year, but our SO has gone down hill the past few games. Granted, we don’t have a lot of shootout games, but it remains to be seen that, in the regular season, that is a weakness. I think we win that game in a 20 min overtime period (i.e. playoff scenario) but we need that scoring touch to be able to beat a goaltender 1 on 1.
Also, as good as Rinne is, it seems just wrong that he allowed both of those SO goals. I know the man is human, but given our lack of ‘pure goal scoring’ forwards we needed him to keep us in it tonight in the SO, which he didn’t do. To be clear, I’m putting this mostly on the forwards, but Rinne needs to make at least one of those saves.

got to agree. We shoot but can’t score. I’m tired of scoring by committee. I want a scorer who can put two or three in the goal every game!! Is that too much to ask? :p}

Hello. My name is Bob and I do not know the Beatles.
If Poile goes after Brown
I will be pissed if Poile goes after Dustin Brown hardcore while letting Carter slip through to a playoff team for a decent defenseman and a 1st round pick. I like Brown as a player but hes not exactly what the team needs. Hes not capable of scoring 35+ goals per season. With Carter now being shipped to LA, the very shallow pool of premium scorers up for sale at the deadline has now run dry. I guess Poile is just hoping and praying that Radulov comes back because thats the last hope of getting a goal scorer.
Do you think that by Poile not going after Carter (who was everything that the Preds need, the missing piece) that he may have lost nearly any chance of convincing Suter to stick around after this season? I would love to know what Suter and Weber really think about this. At the game tonight, the trade became news right before the 1st intermission of a period where the Preds looked terrible. I tried to look at the situation through Suters point of view and I have to say that I would be steaming that Poile didn’t make this big move that would have set this team up for the present and the future. Poile went out and picked up the experienced, veteran dman, but was unable to pull off the most important part of the whole thing. Seems to me that Poile has now missed his one big chance to truly showing Suter, Weber, and everyone else that this franchise means serious business at being a contender, now and in the future. The Preds will never be able to sign a premium goal scorer on the UFA market because now a days all those guys want front loaded contracts that the Preds will never be able to afford. The only way the Preds will get a great goal scorer is by drafting one or by trading for one, and one of the best scorers out there just floated by Poile at the trade deadline.
Hate to say it, but the Preds are better off just keeping the picks and players that they have now and not trade for a mediocre rental forward. Dustin Brown is far from a mediocre player, but he just doesnt seem to fill the greatest need on this team. This trade deadline (with the exception of the Hal Gill trade) has been another frustrating blunder where Poile hasnt had the guts to take the big risks and pay what he must in order to complete this team. There wasn’t a lot out there, but deals were still made. This team is one piece away from being complete, but in two years from now this team could be down to only having one of those key pieces. If Suter leaves, Weber leaves the following year to join him. I’m taking this to the extreme, but by not taking the risk to land a star player, the chance that the Preds lose both Suter and Weber in the next 2 years has never been higher. Making the playoffs is no longer the goal, the goal is to win it all. Everything could change if Radulov does come back, but I won’t hold my breathe waiting for him to return this season.
Suter is on on record as saying
It doesn’t need to be a big name, just the right fit. All is not lost yet, my friend.

BROWN > CARTER
carter may have more pure skill but brown is what we need, not a head case w/ a long contract. brown has decent size, nose for the net, shoots the puck, fairly gritty, a 50-60 point guy, young and 2 more years at just over 3 mil. he hasnt been great this year so unless there is some sort of injury we dont know about hes 3 inches and 30 lbs from being perfect.

GILL AND BROWN
would be a hugely better move than we have ever made at the deadline. better than fish only because there are 2 of them. same for sully. miles ahead of the celebrated forsberg trade.

SO WHAT REALLY GOOD ROSTER PLAYER
would you have traded. im not willing to do that for carter. if we are making a run this year we cant move a quality player for carter. that, imo, would have been the blunder. brown is the perfect fit for this team, at least for all ive heard. other than dreaming of ryan hes more than i would have ever hoped for and hes not a rental.

On this team, Dustin Brown is going to be better than Jeff Carter. I don’t think there’s much arguing that.

how do you know Poile didn't go after Carter?
You know he didn’t get Carter, but not that he didn’t go after Carter. You don’t know what Columbus asked for Carter in an inter-divisional trade. You don’t know that Suter wasn’t apprised of this situation. All of the things you are presuming happened may or may not have happened. You. Don’t. Know.
I get the frustration, but how can you appraise the moves Poile did or didn’t make if you don’t know the details?

nor does it mean that you should discount his comment just because he doesn’t have intimate Poile trade knowledge. I always feel like you won’t listen to someone else’s opinion unless there are spreadsheets worth of data to back it up. Everyone else is saying.. and i paraphrase, “pshh, Brown is better than Carter for our team because of X”. you’re saying, “you shouldn’t be mad at Poile because you can’t prove he didn’t try for him.” Well noone on here is going to know what transpired. It’s like you’re always telling everyone to just shut-up because they can’t “prove” something.

I don’t understand how you can be pissed at Poile for passing on a 30 goal scorer who’s obviously a bad locker room guy and would carry around his baggage for the next 10 years. His contract at that salary price is basically immovable if he isn’t producing at around a 40g clip year in and year out. Lets not make the same damn mistakes Columbus has made.
