Hurricanes 4, Predators 3: Crime Doesn't Pay

The Nashville Predators looked like a classic "team which had played the night before" against the Carolina Hurricanes, getting out-shot by a 2-to-1 margin during the first two periods en route to a 4-3 loss. Anders Lindback was decent, but hardly outstanding in turning aside 29 of 33 Hurricanes shots. Tonight's loss dropped his record to 2-7-0.

Perhaps the real killer, however, was a steady dose of penalties which disrupted the Preds' ability to roll their lines and led to two power play goals for Carolina. Nashville was shorthanded 6 times, an uncharacteristically high number for a team which normally shows discipline in staying out of the box.

Cue the video (might take 30-45 minutes post-game to work):

Your random observations:

  • How good was it to see Craig Smith score a goal? If it seems like forever since his last one, you're close. It was January 24 at Chicago. Halischuk's wraparound is a low-percentage play, but it drew the attention of the defense and when the puck squirted loose, Honey Badger was in good position to bury it.
  • After that, however, the Hurricanes carried the bulk of the play in the first period, which included some nasty gaffes by the Preds in their own zone. Unforced turnovers led to a breakaway opportunity, and David Legwand's Jack Hillen's penalty late in the period.
  • How hot is Colin Wilson? The Predators continued to stink up the joint through the first half of the second period, getting out-shot 9-0, until Willy got a shot from the faceoff dot, then followed up his own rebound to score his 4th goal in six games.
  • Is there anything more nauseating than a quick power play goal against? Two of those in the second period were particularly demoralizing.
  • Overall, it just seemed like a replay from very early this season, when the Preds couldn't even break out of their own zone. I can't remember exactly where I heard this (Pete Weber on the 1st Quarter this morning?) but apparently Brent Peterson noted it, saying if was coaching an opponent he'd have the D pinch down all the time, because Nashville is having such trouble along the boards.
  • It was nice to see a more spirited effort in the third period, but they'd already dug themselves a hole, and those dramatics comebacks just don't always work out.
  • With an assist on Bourque's goal, Jordin Tootoo has 8 helpers in the last 10 games. That comes after the previous 10 games, in which he didn't record a single point. Go figure...
