I cannot believe this...

but if the Caps win today they go from 9th to 3rd place in the East. Meanwhile, we can win 5 straight and can’t move outside the 4-6th seed range. SMH!

by JBoogie22 on Feb 5, 2012 12:44 PM EST reply actions

and by 5 straight i meant the streak we just had, not talking about if we had one brewing.

by JBoogie22 on Feb 5, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the Caps went from 3rd to 9th with one loss earlier this week. Guaranteed seeding for divisional winners. Meanwhile the Preds would be 3rd in the West and the Sharks 7th without it. FWIW, the Caps or Panthers could win 5 straight and it wouldn’t change their seeding.

In order for TB to win the division

they would have to play all of the rest of their games:
—at home
—on Saturday night
—in their 3rd jerseys
—against a team playing the 2nd night of a back-to-back
—after a major injury to a star player or big controversy
—while marking an incredible career milestone for one or more players, AND
—without taking any power plays.

Those seem to be the only ways the team is able to play Lightning hockey.

So you’re saying it’s possible…

by OddManRush on Feb 5, 2012 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Because a few people asked last night

Here are the rules governing a goal scored but not seen by on-ice officials:

78.6 Video Review – Any potential goal requiring video review must be reviewed prior to or during the next stoppage of play. No goal may be awarded (or disallowed) as a result of video review once the puck has been dropped and play has resumed. See Rule 38.

When a team scores an apparent goal that is not seen by the on-ice officials and play continues, the play shall be reviewed by the Video Goal Judge at the next stoppage of play. If the goal is confirmed by video review, the clock (including penalty time clocks, if applicable) is re-set to the time the goal was scored. If the goal is not confirmed by video review, no adjustment is required to the clock time.

Only one goal can be awarded at any stoppage of play. If the apparent goal was scored by Team A, and is subsequently confirmed as a goal by the Video Goal Judge, any goal scored by Team B during the period of time between the apparent goal By Team A and the stoppage of play (Team B’s goal), the Team B goal would not be awarded. However, if the apparent goal by Team A is deemed to have entered the goal, albeit illegally (i.e. distinct kicking motion), the goal shall be disallowed by the Video Goal Judge and since the play should have stopped for this disallowed goal, no goal can be awarded to Team B on the same play. The clock (including penalty time clocks, if applicable) must be re-set to the time of the disallowed Team A goal and play resumed.

Any penalties signaled during the period of time between the apparent goal and the next stoppage of play shall be assessed in the normal manner, except when a minor penalty is to be assessed to the team scored upon, and is therefore nullified by the scoring of the goal. Refer to Rules 16.2 and 18.2. If an infraction happens after the first stoppage of play following an apparent goal (infraction after the whistle) by either team, it is assessed and served in the normal manner regardless as to the decision rendered by the Video Goal Judge.

So, to make sure I’m reading this right: Any penalties assessed after a missed goal are still assessed.

I’ve actually been wondering about that for about a week now. I imagine the penalties would then be listed as having happened at the same time of the missed goal.

joel ward

the player i miss the most from the offseason purge, but he hasn’t reached double digits in either goals or assists yet…i hope they make the playoffs so we can see the Joel Ward “Playoff Beast-mode”

by JBoogie22 on Feb 5, 2012 2:18 PM EST reply actions

They’re losing patience with him. He got off to a good start, like the team did, but his minutes have really gone down under Hunter. He’s 4th line and PK, maybe 7-8 mins a game. … I miss him, too. Hope he sorts things out over there.

I feel like maybe they were expecting a little too much out of him for the regular season.

by emzee on Feb 5, 2012 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

every time I've looked at the event summary of a Caps game

Wardo didn’t get any PK time. they aren’t using his talents very effectively. That and despite his strengths, Ward is a pretty slow skater. His skill set worked under Bruce Bordeau (sp?), but Hunter seems to have directed the Caps back to a style of game where speed is the number 1 priority. Ward doesn’t fit in that role. I hope he finds a niche to fit in.

That game is totally why we have McGrattan. I wonder what it is going to take for Zac Rinaldo to finally get suspended. He is like the new Matt Cooke.

by Predmonton on Feb 5, 2012 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Since Matt Cooke has stopped being Matt Cooke

and Sean Avery has stopped being employed in the NHL.
