Forget Hal Gill, what about Pavel Kubina?
He's a UFA, he's very responsible and he is a couple years younger than Gill. I think he would be a good addition. Also, looking at the Lightning, gimme opinions on St. Louis, LeCavlier or Malone moving to a team that has its sights realistically set on the Cup i.e.Preds. All three have no-trade clauses, but none of those guys are getting any younger either. Do you think Yzerman would move them? Do you think any one of them would be willing to waive their clause in an effort to win a cup?

CAustin is gonna be all over this one, haha!
At first glance (I’ll return to this later when I have more time), I would say that it is highly doubtful that Marty or Vinny will leave Tampa. They are the faces of the franchise and their GM probably isn’t going to get rid of them, especially after the kind of rough year they’ve been having. Their fans need Marty and Vinny. Anyway, on Pavel… seems like he could be a good pick-up, if he’s available. He’s a big body, he puts up reasonable points, and I haven’t seen him play, but if he’s as defensively responsible as you say, than maybe he would be a nice fit. Do you know how much he’d cost in comparison to Gill?

The numbers
Kubina is at $3.85 mil and Gill is at $2.25, but in my opinion, you get an all round better player. When I followed the Thrashers, he was the best D man they had and he was defensively rersponsible and worked the PP very well. He was a minus, but who on the Thrashers wasn’t? Last six years in stats:
2006-2007 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 61 GP 7 G 14 A 21 PTS 48 PIMS
2007-2008 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 72 11 29 40 116 |
2008-2009 Toronto Maple Leafs NHL 82 14 26 40 94 |
2009-2010 Atlanta Thrashers NHL 76 6 32 38 66 |
2010-2011 Tampa Bay Lightning NHL 79 4 19 23 62 | Playoffs 8 2 1 3 10
2011-2012 Tampa Bay Lightning NHL 48 3 8 11 55
I like the idea of a big, stay-at-home D man, but pair this cat up with Josi, and you’ve got another dangerouse D pairing for the PP.
And although Marty and Vinny are franchise players, franchise players have been moved before. I really like the idea of Ryan Malone in a Preds sweater.
No on MSL or VL4
Neither one is up for sale. Bugsy’s a maybe as far as moving, but keep in mind that he fulfills a role on the Lightning that no one else does. I’d expect the Jedi Master to demand a very high price for him, assuming that Bugsy would accept the trade.
Kubina’s a pylon these days. He’s slow and takes lots of penalties. He’s bad a blocking shots. Just not worth it. Moving him would make the Bolts a better team, and that’s probably one of the worst things you can say about a player.

Kubina’s stats:
CorsiRelQoC: 0.86
corsi Rel: 7.6 On/60" 0.08
OffZone Starts: 45.2%
+/
+/- Off/60: 0.12
In other words he plays against moderate opponents in fairly sheltered situations and the play still goes the wrong direction when he’s on the ice. And the team does mildly better (or at least no worse) when he’s off the ice than when he’s on.

Sorry about the strike out. His Corsi Rel is -7.6. and he starts in the off zone 45.2% of the time.
