One would think that if David Polie had any indication that Suter would go to Detroit, he would trade his rights before then. I believe this and think that is the most logical conclusion.
That being said...
If Suter does in-fact become a UFA and is signed by Detroit without us trading his rights, the current management needs to let David go.
To let one of our star players just go straight to our biggest rival without nothing in return is pure madness. I am not saying we need to break the bank for Suter, But according to Capgeek.com, we have the 2nd lowest salary cap in the league. Signing Yip and Mueller (respectable 4th liners) does not a playoff/championship team make. The guys we traded 1st and 2nd round picks for are walking toward UFA while we wait for Suter to see what he is going to do.
We have roughly 12-14 positions on our current roster we have to fill. If trading Suters rights to a team (other than DET) allows us to get more picks/players in return I say we take it. Worst case scenario, he doesn't sign with that team and goes to DET. But at least we don't look like the date that got stood up on prom night when we had others asking us to go. This also allows us to put money into players that are of a top caliber and for us not to be held down.
It's a long shot, I know... But it just seems like the logical choice is to trade his rights while the situation is right. Who knows, maybe we trade his rights and he still goes to UFA but signs with us.
