Happy Qualifying Offer Day: Monday's notes

Today is the deadline for NHL teams to extend qualifying offers to their Restricted Free Agents (that is, if they want to keep them restricted), and this year, it sounds like the Nashville Predators took no chances and delivered most of their QO's well ahead of time, to avoid any possible mixup. In a nutshell, a Qualifying Offer is a contract offer by the team to these players which at least matches the previous year's salary (and for players under $1 million, includes a 5% or 10% raise depending on salary). If the team doesn't want to make such an offer, that player instead becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent on July 1 and can go anywhere he likes.

The vast majority of RFA's receive their QO's. An exception from recent years was defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, who was picked up for Nashville's 2010 playoff run. His salary was over $3 million, and the Preds didn't want to offer that much so he became a UFA and ultimately headed over to the KHL.

So pour over the list of the Preds' upcoming free agents and think about who you'd like to see back after reading this morning's hockey notes...
