As if skating without their top goal-scorer wasn't enough, the Nashville Predators had to go into Saturday's game at San Jose without their top offensive player as Martin Erat was scratched.
Josh Cooper of the Tennessean first reported on Friday that Martin Erat left the Predators' practice after taking a shot off the foot, but initial reaction was that he'd probably be OK:
Erat crumpled to the ice, and a trainer had to help him off.
Predators coach Barry Trotz said, "he'll be fine" and added, "he'll probably have to wear his tennis shoe today."
Tonight, however, Erat didn't come out for the warmup, and the word came down that he would indeed be held out of the game in San Jose:
No Erat tonight- too much swelling— Willy Daunic (@WillyD1025) February 3, 2013
So... the 30th-ranked offense in the NHL goes into battle against the only defeated team in the league, without their two best offensive players?
No problem, right?
