Nashville's Barry Trotz is now the longest-serving head coach in the NHL, after Buffalo fired its longtime bench boss Lindy Ruff.
The Buffalo Sabres' disappointing 6-10-1 start has cost head coach Lindy Ruff his job, after a long run behind the bench.

Ruff, who played most of his NHL career for the Sabres, began coaching the team in 1997-98 and, at 16 years, was the longest-tenured coach in the League. He led the Sabres to the 1999 Stanley Cup Final and had a career regular-season record of 562-452-84 along with 78 ties.
Ruff was also the second-longest tenured coach in North American pro sports next to Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs.
Those descriptions now pass to Nashville's Barry Trotz, who spent some time with Ruff coaching Canada at the World Championships in 2009. Here, in a video posted in 2011, he talks about his respect for Ruff and their similarities as coaches:
