San Jose Sharks 2, Nashville Predators 1: Late Flurry Not Enough

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

The Preds' skaters were dominated most of the night, before a shorthanded goal by Gabriel Bourque put them within striking distance of a tying goal, which they couldn't quite pull off.

They had a team meeting. They juggled the lines. The Nashville Predators tried all the usual gimmicks to shake things up and reverse a horrid effort at Anaheim Wednesday night, but if anything, they may have looked worse tonight as the San Jose Sharks controlled the bulk of play through two periods, leading 2-0 on the scoreboard and 30-12 in the shot totals.

An incredible individual effort by Gabriel Bourque created a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1 in the third, but a flurry of shots in the final minutes weren't enough to tie things up and at least get the Preds to overtime, where they could have earned a point.

Instead, tonight's victory leapfrogs San Jose past Nashville in the Western Conference standings, and the Sharks hold two games in hand, as well. For the moment, the Predators sit in 8th place, but in terms of points earned per game (in order to correct for teams that have played more or fewer games), they rank 11th in the Western Conference.

So where do the Preds go from here?

Well, Monday they play at Los Angeles, but that's not the answer we're all looking for.

The Preds return home Friday to face the Edmonton Oilers. Find the best ticket deals on the market at TiqIQ!

Random Observations

  • Congratulations to Joe Thornton on earning his 1,100th career point on the second goal tonight. No Nashville Predator has even half as much.
  • Brandon Yip was injured on his first shift and did not return, due to an upper body injury.
  • Pekka Rinne was outstanding as usual, but there's only so much he can do.
  • Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist showed some determination to create offense, but outside of them, the other key guys weren'te noticeable.
  • This game was so disastrous Kevin Klein even took a penalty, his first of the season. Has the whole world gone mad???
  • Once the realization sets in that this is not a very good hockey team, there is the question of what the Predators should do the rest of the way. "Tanking" is certainly off the table, but I wouldn't mind seeing a position or two opened on the roster for the best prospects in Milwaukee, to give them a taste of NHL action and see if they might be ready to contribute in 2013-2014. Such a move doesn't have to represent throwing in the towel at all, either. I would think a Michael Latta or even Austin Watson might fare OK in a limited role.
