You may have seen the news this week that the NHL is considering an expansion franchise in Seattle for the 2014-15 season. Setting aside whether or not the league should expand at all, is this the right place to do it? There are those who think anything but another Canadian team (or two) will be a big mistake. While putting a team in Quebec City or the Toronto area makes some sense, what division would these teams play in? We're currently at 16 teams in the East and 14 teams in the West, so who goes where? Quebec City is a couple of hours to the east of Montreal...not a great candidate for a ton of games in California every year, not to mention the extra travel burden on everyone else in the conference. The Toronto area is a little further west, but it's basically the same as Buffalo. Could we move another team out of the East? Sure, but who would that be? Remember, we just finished a realignment to fix this very problem. My prediction? Seattle gets a team in the next couple of years, followed by one of the Canadian markets, forcing somebody (looking at you, Columbus) to move to the West. I think Seattle would be a great place to expand, but what do you think? Should they get a team before the Canadians?
