Stanley Cup Droughts...Well It Could Be a Lot Worse

Bruce Bennett

Since there are 30 teams in the NHL, one would think that most teams would win a cup about every 30 years. As the chart below shows this has not been the case, in two cases teams have gone 50% longer than that. The Preds current drought puts us in the middle of the pack, with a shorter wait than many "Traditional Hockey Markets". It is amazing the arrogance of certain fan bases (Maple Leafs, Flyers, Canucks, etc)when they have waited longer than the 30 year average to hoist the best trophy in sports. Also interesting to note that one Canadian team has won the cup since 1/2 of a decade PRIOR to the Preds entry into the league. With 7 teams there should be a Canadian winner every 4-5 years, but it has been 19 (4 times that) since the Canadians won. The bottom line is while we all want to get there, how would you like to be a Leafs or Blues fan and have been waiting 45 years!!!
