Nashville Predators News: David Poile Reportedly Approached By Calgary Flames For Front Office Job

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Tony Gallagher of the Province has long been known as a bit of a bomb-tosser, and today a footnote in a column on the Vancouver Canucks brings surprising news to Nashville Predators fans (hat tip to Pro Hockey Talk):

The Flames interviewed NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan for the job that Burke officially took Thursday in Calgary, but the former Red Wings star turned it down, apparently wishing to remain in a larger city. Further, so did Nashville GM David Poile, who was also approached by the Flames ownership over the summer, the team evidently asking for and receiving permission to speak to the longtime Preds boss. He also wished to remain where he is.

This relates to the President of Hockey Operations position which was created in Calgary for Brian Burke, which was announced earlier this week.

It's surprising to hear Poile's named talked about in connection with other NHL jobs, given his status here as Nashville's one and only general manager. Considering his long run previously with the Washington Capitals and the loyalty he has shown to his head coaches, he's simply not someone whose name pops up very often on the hot stove circuit.

That said, it is encouraging to read that he "wished to remain where he is." Not only is that presumably an endorsement of the competitive prospects for each team (despite their finishes last season the Preds have much more to build around than the woeful Flames), but it also speaks well to Nashville's ability to hold on to one of its critical pieces when a "traditional" hockey market comes calling.
