I don't think we should fire Poile. Watching talented forwards such as Bourque and Wilson and Smith (who, on anyother team would be at least 2nd liners) struggle time after time, is a DIRECT 100% RESULT Trotz's "system". Radulov is a perfect example of how fucked up our coaching is. When he first came into the league, he tore it up. But when we forced him to play dump and chase instead of the style that best suited his skillset, he left for Russia. Poile is one of the best GM's in the NHL. He got the 'next Henrik Zetterberg' and a 3rd round pick for Legwand; he traded away Martin Erat and a grinder in Latta for FIlip Forsberg; he is known for finding gems in the draft; but he signed these players last summer to fit TROTZ's coaching style.
Has anyone ever noticed that some preds players are really productive during their first NHL games, but a lot of them soon thereafter go cold? My theory is that being new to the team, dumb and chase has not entire sunk in for them so they continue to play their style, but then they are quickly told to play dump and chase, which messes them up. If we changed coaches, we would set the path right for Forwards such as Jarnkrok and Forsberg, and we would give a better chance for players like Stalberg to be a force as well. He's fast as hell and he (much like Rads, the Kostitsyns, Wilson, Bourque, Jarnkrok, Forsberg, and Smith) isn't meant for playing dump and chase. If we switched to an up tempo, puck rushing, speed stressing system, I guarantee you that we would see better results as a team, and better results from our skilled forwards that are being confined by the rigors of the nightmare that is dump and chase.
On the other hand, the defensemen on this team are good. Weber, Josi, MDZ, Jones, Ellis and Ekholm are good defensemen to build a team around (the last 2 will get better with experience.). Dump and chase long worked for us because we had Suter AND Weber and as a result we had puck posession twice the time we do now. Without Suter, it just hasn't been the same. We need to rush the puck instead of dumping and chasing. Fortunately, with the trade of Klein, I think we really did shape up our defense the long term to be able to do that. We have good, two-way, puck rushing defensemen and if we based our coaching systems more on speed, I can certainly see this defense corps becoming one of the best in the NHL.
Rinne will be good for another 5 or 6 years at least, and with Hellberg and Maz competing for the backup job in the fall, I have faith in our goalies at this point (even though we still shouldn't have traded Lindback)
The issue for me continues to be just the forwards. Some people are making it seem like we need to completely rebuild, and this is utterly ridiculous. In reality the solution is quite simple: get rid of Trotz and his stupid dump and chase. With him gone, our forwards can flourish. They are so talented and it is BEYOND excruciating watching their talent be wasted on this idiotic system. Trading Legwand was a good move because it allows Wilson to step into that number one role on this team. But again, he's a different player than Legwand and he needs a DIFFERENT SYSTEM. I'm from Toronto and I watch the leafs a lot, and they are one of the better, more exciting teams in the east because of their speed! If we get faster and abandon dump and chase, we may not be top of the league in wins, but we'll at least go back to the old successful tradition (one that I actually quite love) of developing players through the DRAFT (only this time it'll actually work, because we won't have to dump and chase).
The solution does not lie in trading Weber or Josi or Ellis or Rinne or anything like that. First, we must remember that if dump and chase (i.e. Trotz) is removed, there's a good chance we won't have to make any big trades because we'll be playing the style that best promotes the development of the players we ALREADY HAVE. Before we go around looking for solutions elsewhere, one needs to take a look in the mirror and say "maybe it's us".
Oay, those are my thoughts. Let me know if I'm crazy.
