It looks very likely that Barry Trotz will end up a HC somewhere in the NHL this year (even though there is not even any other vacancy at the moment). There has already been a lot of speculation about Vancouver or Toronto, as well as his "hometown" of Winnipeg. Wherever it might be, it may present an opportunity for GMDP and the Preds.
As just about the hottest coaching name out there, Trotz' new team will be excited to have him and eager to provide him with the kind of team he thinks he needs to succeed. What type of players will that team be looking to add in the off season? Exactly the type of players of which Nashville has an overabundance - gritty, hard-to-play-against, defensively responsible forwards such as Spaling, Gaustad, and Nystrom.
While the Nystrom signing worked out OK (maybe a bit long on term), Spaling is due for a decent pay raise coming off a career year, and the overwhelming opinion on OTF is that Gaustad is overpaid for what he brings to the team.
One common criticism of Trotz was that he was overly committed to players he knows and trusts, too often choosing dependability over skill. There probably will not be anyone else in the league who values these current Preds more than Trotz. And as the fresh new coach, he will have significant influence with his new GM to bring in players that fit his system.
If ever there was a opportunity to shed the Gaustad contract (or other "grit" players), and get the best value in return, Trotz' new team may be it.
