Inertia: (noun) "the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion (including a change in direction). In other words, it is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant linear velocity."
If we consider our beloved Nashville Predators for a moment as the physical object within this scenario and the management of Barry Trotz and David Poile as the motion (insomuch as they determine whether this franchise accelerates forward to a Stanley Cup or backwards to the Draft lottery) then we can assess the nature of our situation and whether or not we are indeed stuck in a state of competitive intertia.
Regardless of your opinion in this discussion, the gold sweatered physical object that we fans hope to urge forward into excellence is currently much closer to a state of rest than a state of accelerated motion. We are outside of a playoff spot, mediocre at best in many key categories and are clearly a step behind the elite teams of the National Hockey League. The force being applied to that physical object seems to have dissipated in recent years due to certain deficiencies of our management tandem. The Preds find themselves being passed by franchises that have exacted change upon their state of motion and are either accelerating greatly (COL) or are consciously decelerating (CGY) so that they can acquire players through the draft who will aid their attempts at future motion.
In laymens' terms, we root for a team that seems to be in a perpetual state of inertia and becomes more entrenched within that principle day by day. Never truly ascendant, never truly descendant, we simply exist year to year as a constant within the NHL. Meanwhile, the consequences that will dictate our future success (FF, Jones etc.) seem to be mitigated by the fact that our two best players will both enter their mid to late thirties when those young players fully blossom. If there is no change exacted upon our state of motion, I see no reason to expect more than average hockey for the next 3 years out of this franchise and possibly the next 7 as Pekka Rinne and Shea Weber grow older.
The inspiration for this fanpost comes from the fact that we are manifesting the most conflicting state of inertia in modern sports. We are winning meaningless hockey games in order to acquire the worst prospect available from the upcoming draft. This is pointless to me as it is very clear that elite talent is what generates Wins in the modern NHL.
