I was, and am, a Trotz supporter....but that ship has sailed, so it is with high expectations that I await the beginning of the PL era. Yesterday I could not wait to watch the USA play Belarus in the WC's, and it did not disappoint. The Lavy coached team won, scored 5 goals, Seth and (especially) Craig Smith looked good, and both Kostitsyn's had epic meltdowns; all told a great Friday afternoon. Today we get to watch them against the Swiss, and October can't get here soon enough. It got me thinking about October and the new beginning for the franchise and something just get hitting me. At the end of the Trotz era there were tons of criticism, some very accurate. However there were 3 that really bothered me: the complaint about "line juggling", the complaint about the "doghouse" and the most ludicrous of all, the complaint about which line starts home games. While looking at PL stuff today, I came across the referenced article from his time in Philly. What does it talk about? Line juggling and his doghouse. I don't reference here to denigrate PL, quite the opposite. I post it to plead that we take these criticisms out of our discussions. Why? Because EVERY coach in the NHL juggles lines, a perfect example is the Blackhawk/Wild series. Coach Q is shuffling lines almost every shift. EVERY coach has a doghouse. Why you get put there varies greatly from coach to coach, and what it takes to get out varies from coach to coach varies, but they all have one. Finally, who starts at home means NOTHING. The major advantage in the NHL for the home team is last change. You get to dictate the matchups. If we are playing the Penguins and they have Crosby and Malkin on the top 2 lines, and they choose to start their 3rd or 4th line, there is no way we start Weber/Josi, that would be wasting them when we want them on the ice against Crosby. I know that is basic, but I have seen it complained about on here and I had to say it. Will PL make mistakes? Of course. Will he do things some of us don't like? Yes. Should we express how we fell positively or negatively? Absolutely, that is what this blog is for. But, PLEASE can we avoid these complaints? We will never have a coach that doesn't do them. Thanks for putting up with my rant and let's join together to support the new sheriff and get back into the playoffs, these games are WAY too much fun not to be a part of!
