What is a slow start?

Over the summer I have continually heard how the Predators had slow start and didn't get it going till after the allstar break. You hear it from fans, pundits, bloggers and so on. This has never reconciled with my memory, so I started looking at the 2008-2009 season win/lost record by month.

As you can see the record is basically .500 through December. The real problem came during a stretch starting December 28, 2008 and running through January 6, 2009 of five losses in a row. With only four wins to show for in January, The Predators rang in the New Year with a clang.

This all gets me to thinking, what is the definition of a slow start? I certainly wouldn't characterize .500 a good start, but does it qualify as a slow start? If you look a the Predators as a team that is not picked to be a divisional power house and compete for the Presidents Cup, then they have to limit the damage to their record by not going on long stretches of losing. It just creates gaps to large to overcome. The fatal blow came from not the start, but a terrible middle. Maybe that doesn't sound as good or roll off the tongue as a sports metaphor, but it seems as a more accurate statement.

So lets project this to the coming 2009-2010 season. What kind of start do you expect the team to have, or what can be expected? What are your thoughts? Did the Predators get off to a slow start?
