Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily reports that the Red Wings have signed winger Jason Williams, taking another of the "secondary scoring" options off the free agent market:
Jason Williams is back. The former Red Wing is a current Wing, signing a one-year contract today. The right-handed shooting forward gives Detroit 13 forwards. Depending on Williams' salary, the Wings will likely be able to carry 23 players this season. Last season, they were forced to carry 22 because they were so close to the salary cap.
Williams has played the point on the power play under Coach Mike Babcock and might resume that role with Mikael Samuelsson having left for Vancouver.
While there are still many players out there on the market (Vinny Prospal, Robert Lang, Nikolai Zherdev, Petr Sykora, Alex Tanguay, etc.), the number of teams looking for help is getting smaller and smaller. For a team like the Predators that might like to make an addition but doesn't have much money to spend, time is perhaps on their side.
