He's like a Swiss Army Knife for Nashville Predators head coach Barry Trotz, and now Jerred Smithson has signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract, per reports on Twitter from Josh Cooper and Bryan Mullen of The Tennessean. After this season, in which he's making $750,000, Smithson could have become an unrestricted free agent.
His penalty killing, faceoff-winning skills (9th in the league), and ability to play on a checking line against tough opponents makes him a valuable role player on this team, so it's not surprising to see David Poile lock him up for two more years.
