The Edmonton Oilers have finally put defenseman Sheldon Souray on re-entry waivers, meaning any team in the NHL can claim him, and the Oilers will be liable for paying half his salary ($4.5 million through 2011-12). The question becomes, should the Nashville Predators put in a claim?
UPDATE 2/21/2011: Souray cleared waivers, so the Oilers are stuck with him.
Let's take a look at his scouting report and consider the possibilities...
Assets
Flaws
Career Potential
After a contentious dispute with Oilers management, Souray was placed in the AHL this season, but not with the Oilers' affiliate in Oklahoma City, but rather the Hershey Bears, in order to keep him away from their own prospects. By all accounts, Souray is a well-respected, good team guy, and he's played in 3 NHL All-Star Games.
He's good a monster shot from the point and plays the left side, where the Preds have really needed some more offensive punch, particularly on the power play. Should David Poile consider adding to his defensive arsenal on this red-tag special?
