News comes this morning (via Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN), that winger Marek Svatos has been claimed by the Ottawa Senators, a team which is pretty much playing out the string in anticipation of a major rebuilding effort to commence this summer.
The other 3 big names on the waiver wire, Nikolay Zherdev, Ales Kotalik, and Craig Rivet, all went unclaimed.
It's a legitimate question to ask why the Preds can't use a scorer like this. As I wrote a couple weeks ago, given the Preds' injury problems this season he would seem to make a nice option to have in reserve. After all, despite his guts, Steve Sullivan doesn't appear to be flying around at 100% between having to wear a full face cage and the groin problem which kept him out of the lineup for an extended period.
Although certainly it can be difficult to justify having an $800,000 player on the payroll just to act as an insurance policy.
