Believe it or not, there are women out there who are new to hockey, and want to learn more about it because they're in a relationship with a guy who is a fan. My wife would've probably appreciated an article like this back in 1996 when we first started dating. Just because an article like this caters to that audience doesn't mean they're declaring that women in general aren't "real" hockey fans.
