Ducks 3, Predators 2 (SO): Yet Another Shootout Loss

New, comments

For the third time in five games, the Nashville Predators went to a shootout, and dropped a late-night decision to the Anaheim Ducks.

Victor Decolongon

Goaltender Viktor Fasth, making his NHL debut, played well for the Ducks but the Predators had difficulty generating many great scoring chances. Oddly enough, neither team could really get much going on the power play.

Random Observations

  • One thing that concerned me during this one was the way Anaheim took over things physically in the second period, with the Preds unable to either avoid the hits or answer back in a meaningful way. The one thing that Nashville does miss with Jordin Tootoo is having a guy who can skate a regular shift while bringing that physical play.
  • What a bummer of a night for Patric Hornqvist. Early in the third period, he took a Shea Weber shot off his right thigh, then just a few minutes later had a Duck fall into his left leg, bending that knee at a nasty-looking angle. Obviously we'll stay tuned for any injury news, as the Preds can't afford to lose one of their most productive offensive players.
  • Craig Smith played just 4:02, and after a shift early in the second period didn't hit the ice again, even though Hornqvist left. Who knows what the short-term future holds for Smith here, but in the meantime, the Preds can't send him to Milwaukee without exposing him to waivers, so forget about that idea.
  • On the other end of the scale you have Brandon Yip, who scored a nice goal early, and got some power play time in lieu of Hornqvist later.
  • After this one the Preds are 1-for-11 on shootout attempts. That trend won't last forever, but ending it very, very soon would be nice.
