Nashville Predators 1, San Jose Sharks 0: Colin Wilson Ends the Drought

New, comments

A long scoreless night ended in victory for the Predators as Colin Wilson tipped home a Ryan Ellis pass in overtime to beat San Jose.

USA TODAY Sports

This game went scoreless through regulation, but had a number of twists and turns along the way. The first period saw the Sharks dominate play, while in the second the Predators gained momentum by killing off a slew of penalties. The third saw Nashville take greater command and get into the offensive end, but they couldn't connect on their best opportunities.

After dodging a deadly scoring chance for the Sharks early in OT, Ryan Ellis led the play into the offensive end and laid a soft wrister towards the net, where Colin Wilson tipped it by Antti Niemi for his 4th goal of the season, ending the Preds' two-game losing streak. Pekka Rinne was spectacular earning his 2nd shutout of the season, and was named the game's 1st Star (Willy was 2nd, Niemi 3rd).

Random Observations

  • Early on, the Preds had absolutely no jump. It was well over 5 minutes in before Roman Josi stepped up, getting off a good shot from the point, and following that up with a drive to the net which created a great chance for Colin Wilson, who roofed the shot. That kind of initiative is sorely lacking among the forwards these days.
  • Officially the Predators ended up with 3 shots on goal in that first period, a pretty disheartening display by a team which is supposed to be focusing on creating more offense. A few boos were heard as the team skated off.
  • Since when does the Marty Party take place in the penalty box? His 8 PIMs tonight tie a career high, set January 17 2008 against Anaheim.
  • Give full marks to the Nashville penalty killers, even without Hal Gill they fought through several difficult stretches (including 41 seconds of 5-on-3) while yielding very little in terms of scoring chances to San Jose.
  • This was the Preds' 18th consecutive sellout... it seems so long ago that a Tuesday night meant a crowd of 10,000.
  • The biggest roar from the crowd may have come late in the 3rd period, when a fight broke out in the lower reaches of Section 113. There wasn't anything happening on the ice, but Amanda DiPaolo helpfully pointed it out to me.
  • Paul Gaustad had another big night on the faceoffs, winning 16 of 21.
  • Pekka Rinne, Pekka Rinne, Pekka Rinne. It's no wonder that he got an A on his report card.
