Nashville Predators 3, Phoenix Coyotes 0: Pekka Rinne Does It Again

New, comments

For a while, it looked like another long, scoreless night. An outburst in the 3rd period, however, led to a Nashville win.

USA TODAY Sports

Much like Tuesday night against San Jose, this was a game in which you wondered if anyone was going to score [INSERT YOUR OWN VALENTINE'S DAY JOKE HERE]. Finally, early in the 3rd period, Gabriel Bourque's speed caused Michael Boedker to take a Hooking call, putting the Preds on the power play. Fittingly, it was Bourque who got the goal, tipping Martin Erat's shot with his skate to the far side of Mike Smith, who had an outstanding game in the Phoenix net. SB Nation highlighted a clip from the end of the 2nd period, when he barely kept Nashville off the board.

Pekka Rinne wasn't so shabby himself, of course. Tonight's win pushes him to 6-1-0 in his last seven, and after making 19 saves tonight, his save percentage is now .938 and he has 3 shutouts in 12 games.

Nick Spaling added some insurance with a nice shot midway through the 3rd, slipping a wrister just underneath the crossbar and over Smith's shoulder. Fisher's score with 1:44 was like a breath of fresh air, he one-timed a pass from below the goal line and seemed to have the world lift off his shoulders at the same time.

Nashville is now 7-3-4, good for 18 points and 4th place in the Western Conference.

Random Observations

  • Boy the Preds stunk on the faceoff dot tonight, going 16-for-46. Those happen sometimes, though.
  • Steve Sullivan had some good chances, and was recognized with a nice video tribute in the 1st period, showing his 2009 Masterton Trophy acceptance speech. Chants of "Sully! Sully! Sully!" were heard in Bridgestone after that one.
  • Despite the lack of goals early, the Predators had more offensive chances in this game than they have for a while, they just couldn't finish.
