Pekka Rinne Shafted in NHL 3 Stars of the Week Honors

New, comments

With back-to-back shutouts against Phoenix and San Jose, Pekka Rinne surely had earned himself a nod in the league's weekly honor roll. Instead, the league went with the feel-good story of the month in Anaheim's Viktor Fasth.

USA TODAY Sports

Pekka Rinne didn't make the cut in the NHL's 3 Stars of the Week awards which were just announced, with John Tavares of the New York Islanders, Viktor Fasth of the Anaheim Ducks, and Carolina's Jiri Tlusty being chosen instead for the period covering February 11-17.

The league typically picks two skaters and one goalie for its 3 Stars of the Week honors, and instead of picking the guy who has carried the Nashville Predators on his back this season, including a rare set of back-to-back shutouts against San Jose and Phoenix, they went with the rookie Fasth and his win streak.

Here's Fasth's section from the NHL's press release:

SECOND STAR -- VIKTOR FASTH, G, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Fasth continued the brilliant start to his NHL career by posting a 3-0-0 record, 1.89 goals-against average and .935 save percentage as the Ducks (11-2-1) extended their Pacific Division lead to six points. Fasth made 28 saves in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 12, recorded 26 stops in a 5-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings Feb. 15 and completed the week with a 32-save performance a 3-2 shootout win over the Nashville Predators Feb. 16. Fasth improved to 8-0-0, becoming the third goaltender in League history to win his first eight-or-more career decisions (Ray Emery, 9-0-0 with Ottawa from 2003-2005 and Bob Froese, 8-0-0 with Philadelphia in 1983). The 30-year-old native of Kalix, Sweden signed with the Ducks as a free agent in May 2012 after garnering Swedish Elite League Goaltender of the Year honors the previous two seasons.

Fasth's story is an entertaining one, as rookie goalies who start with a hot streak come along just about every season, but not usually ones who are 30 years old. Still, the league fell in love here with Goaltending Wins, which is perhaps the most overrated stat in the book. Fasth played three games last week, and gave up two goals each time. Fortunately for him, the Ducks are giving him plenty of run support these days as compared to what Pekka Rinne has to deal with.

Let's put these numbers side by side:

Viktor Fasth Pekka Rinne
Record 3-0-0 2-0-1
Save % .935 .969
GAA 1.89 0.64
Shutouts 0 2

Nice week, Viktor, but Pekka deserved this one more.

This would should have been the 7th time that Pekka had won "Star of the Week" honors, having done so twice last season.
