For those of you who do like analytics, get your geek on with this paper (the link is a PDF) on Zone Entries submitted to this year's Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (also known as the reason I get depressed around this time each year, since I can never go). The implication here is that the difference in team offensive & defensive performance is largely driven by neutral zone play, expressed as (1) how often you're entering the offensive zone as compared to your opponent, and (2) how often you enter the zone with possession of the puck, rather than playing dump & chase.
