Nashville Predators 2, Colorado Avalanche 3: Two Points Squandered

New, comments

The Predators drop this one with only two games left, and the division left up for grabs.

Editor's Note: We're reformatting the recapping in preparation for the playoffs. The full one will be posted soon, but in the meantime, here's the bare bones info for you to start the conversation.

This was an everything to lose game for Nashville. With the Blues now leading the division, and the Blackhawks right on the heels of the Preds, Nashville needed to end the season strongly enough to gain some much needed momentum going into the playoffs next week. On the flip side, Colorado has nothing to play for except for wanting to be the spoilers. In the end, it was Colorado that skated away with the two points.

The Nashville Predators started the scoring early in the first with a goal from Calle Jarnkrok. Colorado fired back with two goals just nine seconds apart from Jarome Iginla and Ryan O'Reilly. The Predators responded early in the third though with a goal from Ryan Ellis. The tie wouldn't last too long as Joey Hishon tallied to give the Avs a one goal lead. The goal by Hishon was enough to give the Avs the win in this one.

Random Observations

  • It sure is nice to have the top line fully healthy again. They bring a different dynamic to the game when they are all healthy and on the same line together.
  • What a play by Colin Wilson saving that goal. That is exactly the type of defensive effort the Preds are going to need if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs this year. Overall, the first period was a well played period by Nashville. They knew exactly what they wanted to do, and did it.
  • Through the first period and a half, every line for Nashville was clicking. The passing was on point (spoke too soon on this one), the one on one battles were being won, and chances were being created.
  • Can anyone verify if the shot counter is accurate? Cause those numbers don't seem right.
  • Every time Jarome Iginla is playing against Nashville, I am terrified. He is a Predator killer. How long before Chicago or St. Louis get their hands on him next year just so they have a player that pretty much scores at will against Nashville (at least it feels like that).
  • Two goals in nine seconds. That is not playoff hockey from a defensive standpoint. Just embarrassing.
  • The second period could not have ended any worse for the Preds. Ryan Ellis looked to be hurt too. But it clearly wasn't too severe as he scored the tying goal in the third.
  • Holy Pekka! That save on Alex Tanguay was his best of the night... it was just too bad he couldn't do it against Hishon. It wasn't a very good goal to give up, but it was made possible by a very uncharacteristic turnover by Roman Josi. Slop slop slop.
  • These refs just can't get anything right in Colorado, can they?
  • The Preds threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Avs towards the end of the game. The only bright note of this one is that the Blues and the Blackhawks both lost in regulation tonight as well.

OTF's Super Duper Stars of the Game

  • Ryan Ellis: He got hurt, and then came back to score the tying goal. #HumanRocketship
  • uhmmmmmmmm....
  • Semyon Varlamov: I guess I should give credit where credit is due.
