Winnipeg Jets 5, Nashville Predators 4 (OT): Comeback Doesn't Last, Streak Now Five

New, comments

Nashville loses a heartbreaker in Winnipeg tonight.

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

The Predators found a way to get a point tonight, but weren't able to get the extra one in overtime.

The Nashville Predators got on the board first with an early goal by none other than Kevin Fiala. That goal happened so fast that it was ruled a no goal initially. Both the Predators and the Jets had solid chances in the first, but the period ended with Fiala's goal being the lone one.

Dustin Byfuglien kicked off the scoring in the second period to bring the Jets back to even with Nashville. Not too long after that, Bryan Little gave the Jets the lead on the powerplay. Byfuglien then added another to give Winnipeg the two goal lead in the second period. The Predators threatened a few times but weren't able to come up with a goal in the second.

Nick Ehlers added to Winnipeg's total with a goal six minutes into the third period. Ryan Johansen made things interesting with a goal to cut the lead in half for Nashville. Eric Nystrom made it really interesting when he added another goal to pull it within one. James Neal found the back of the net to tie it back up with just second left in the game.

But Blake Wheeler made the comeback fruitless when he scored just 51 seconds into overtime.

Random Observations

  • The Predators did not waste any time in tonight's game. Fiala scored on his first shift of the game. That's the way you make an impression. I am sure Laviolette was thrilled with that early outcome. Oh, and Joey picked up another helper on that goal.
  • Nashville definitely started the game off the right way. They got some great chances and converted on one of them. The down side is that they went on the penalty kill back to back early in the game. They have to be more disciplined than that, regardless if they kill them off or not.
  • All in all a great first period by Nashville. Other than the two back to back penalties they took, the Preds looked aggressive and consistent on the offensive end. That is what I have been wanting to see for the past two months. All they needed was a little bit of #FialaTime!
  • I loved seeing the emotion coming through the players tonight. Players were skating hard, playing till the end of the whistle, and fighting. Even after the Jets scored their first goal of the game, the Preds responded with an excellent shift.
  • Speaking of which, Fiala and Ryan Johansen are magic together. They were wreaking havoc all night long. Can we make this a permanent thing please?!
  • The dreaded second period got to the Predators. Not only did they give up three goals, but they let their emotions get the better of them by taken undisciplined penalties once again. It makes you think what else can be said in the locker room at this point? I am sure they have heard it all before already, but something needs to change. Someone has to stand up and say this is enough. Or at least you would think.
  • Ehlers goal pretty much put the nail in the coffin for the Preds tonight. Please note that I wrote this after his goal, so disregard this comment if Nashville makes a comeback.
  • Joey is so good. He is definitely worth the trade, it's just unfortunate that the team forgot how to play competitive hockey these last couple of weeks.
  • Scratch everything bad I said earlier in this post. Regardless of the outcome, the Predators showed resolve by mounting a valiant comeback.
  • We need to get #FireTimPeel trending ASAP. That third period was so bad from an officiating stand point.
  • NEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Damn....

OTF's Super Duper Stars of the Game

  • Kevin Fiala: He scored on his first shot of the game. Gotta love that.
  • Dustin Byfuglien: Had two of the Jets' goals tonight. I guess that earns you a spot here.
  • Ryan Johansen: This kid is the real deal. That is all.
