What can be said about Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau in this report card? Not much, to be honest. He played a whopping 8 games for the Predators this season, as well as 5 games during the playoffs. He contributed 1 assist in those games. Meh.
Parenteau was traded from New Jersey on March 1st for a sixth round draft pick. With little fanfare, Parenteau was like a less-effective Vern Fiddler. He didn’t shove anyone around or grind out minutes. Parenteau was a veteran depth guy who occasionally got to wear a Preds sweater when called upon. Honestly, I’m just glad we didn’t lose something crucial in order for Parenteau to show up and contribute nothing. The 33-year old Parenteau provided some veteran leadership and got to see plenty of games from the press box.
I’m not entirely sure why Parenteau was traded away from the Devils. He scored 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 59 games played. His stats for each previous year are very similar, surpassing the 20-goal mark twice. I suppose New Jersey was in desperation mode in March and wanted to shuck some assets for draft picks during their rebuild phase.
P.A. Parenteau has played for Anaheim (his draft team), Chicago, New York Rangers and Islanders, Colorado, Montreal, Toronto, and New Jersey. With the Predators, Parenteau played primarily third and fourth-line minutes with players like Mike Fisher, Austin Watson, and Kevin Fiala. He wasn’t trusted on the power play, and mostly started his shifts in the O-zone. He was a hired gun. That’s pretty much all.
Um? Being featured on a "Beneath the Ice" episode? I'd say Parenteau's best moments were when he wore a Preds sweater during the playoffs, although his contributions were nonexistent.
His worst moments were in the press box with a bottle of water and a pizza and Fiddler/Salomaki/McLeod/Zolnierczyk/Hunt.
Trending Up or Down?
The only thing I wonder about is what kind of contribution Parenteau would have made had he been given more ice time with the Predators. However, I’m not sure who he would replace in order to be slotted onto a line. There are far too many questions about Parenteau that are unanswered because of his lack of playing time. Parenteau is probably trending down as he hasn't yet found employment for the 2017-2018 season.
C. I don’t think we saw enough of Parenteau to be able to grade him fairly, and I feel like he could have made actual contributions if given more than a handful of opportunities. When we did see him, he was fairly invisible because of younger talent like Pontus Aberg or Frederick Gaudreau. I wish him the best with a team that will put him on the ice and allow him to play third or fourth-line minutes. Parenteau has never stuck with a team for more than two seasons. He’s the typical rental player who can contribute tough minutes when called upon. Unfortunately, the Predators never called upon him for too long.
