Saturday’s Dump & Chase: Player “Safety”

New, comments

Honestly, the DoPS is starting to sound increasingly Orwellian a title. Ministry of Peace. Department of Player Safety.

Predators Reassign Three to Milwaukee | NHL.com
As Eric pointed out, Yakov Trenin and Alexandre Carrier are headed to the AHL All-Star Game. Hopefully we get Trenin back after the break.

Predators' Arvidsson fined $2,000 for diving | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
Dear NHL,

Hi, yes, Viktor Arvidsson has balance issues or something? There've been a couple of times he fell over off the opening faceoff and, obviously, nobody said he was diving then? Can someone explain why you're fining Arvidsson for diving but not penalizing people for hitting other people in the head?

Thanks!

Jets' Perreault says he 'obviously wouldn't slash anybody in the face' | Sportsnet.ca
Probably for the best, yeah. He stands by saying head contact should be out of the game, though, and Thursday's rant at least got him a spotlight, even if maybe not the best one.

Tkachuk billboard becomes win for charities | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
A genuinely fun and good story out of the flaming car crash otherwise known as the Battle of Alberta, one which doesn’t make me want to throw any books at any NHL players since DoPS won’t.

I feel like it's going to be way too easy for the Oilers to make a Kassian-related mistake.

US, Canadian National Team players to participate in NHL All-Star Weekend | The Ice Garden
This is the on-ice aspect of the NHL All-Star Weekend I'm looking forward to more than anything else, and it's not close.

Actually, with the NHL’s determination to remove any interesting player moments from the All-Star Weekend, this might be the aspect, period, of the thing that I’m looking forward to the most.

Pass or Fail? LA Kings' Stadium Series jerseys | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
Someone pointed out that the Kings probably didn't want a jersey covered with white powder, and ever since then I've been distracted by every other complaint I have by that.

Seriously, though, fail.

Hurricanes lose Hamilton to broken leg | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
Awful news for Hamilton, who was having what was easily a Norris-caliber season, and for the Hurricanes.

Stars can't afford to be without Heiskanen | ProHockeyTalk | NBC Sports
Thursday was a rough night for Norris contenders, apparently. Hopefully Heiskanen's recovery is quick and comes without lingering side effects; any injury that gets described with "knee to the head" is not a great one to have.

Q&A: Flames director of marketing on the return of the retro jerseys | Sportsnet.ca
Calgary: the only city with a NHL team where people wear that team's jersey to games, apparently.

Marketing is hugely important for any league working to build its fanbase, and the Beauts have been doing a great job.
