Breaking: NHLPA Board Agrees on 24-Team Playoff Setup for 2020

The NHLPA board’s approval doesn’t mean that hockey is back just yet, though—the NHL still needs to agree with their agreement (negotiations are fun), and then yet more negotiations about process will follow. League and union still have to cover scheduling, locations, and safety, among other things.

Still, we know a little more now. If and when hockey does return, it will be with a 24-team bracket for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, allowing teams at the fringe of the playoff picture to play their way in, or out. The Nashville Predators and the Arizona Coyotes will face off in one of the play-in series—not ideal for Preds fans, since the Preds had been in a wildcard spot at the time of the season’s pause.

We’ll have more coverage of the 2020 playoffs as and when we learn more, and some updates on Arizona after Memorial Day.

Have a happy, healthy, and safe weekend, all!
