Colorado Avalanche 5, Nashville Predators 4: Preds cough up 3 leads and lose in the shootout

Shootout problems, Nashville has ’em. Holding leads? Got them, too.

The Predators fell to 1-8 in shootouts this season after coughing up three separate leads to the Colorado Avalanche this evening, ultimately losing a 5-4 decision.

Roman Josi scored twice in the first period to give the Predators an early lead, but Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog tied things back up with two goals of his own by the mid-point of the second. Matt Cullen put one top shelf for his 8th goal of the season to move Nashville back in front, but in the third period the Avalanche put on all the pressure, out-shooting the Preds 12-4 before Cody McLeod tied the game at 3-3.

The roller coaster ride only continued from there, with Cullen adding his second of the game to clinch free Frosties for the fans, but Nick Holden tied the game again less than a minute later. From there, it was on to overtime and the shootout, where Calle Jarnkrok started things off with a fancy score on Semyon Varlamov, but all went downhill for the Predators after that.

Next up, the Preds (31-31-11) host the hapless Buffalo Sabres Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.

Random Observations

  • That Jarnkrok feller could see a lot of ice time down the stretch if he keeps winning puck battles like he does.
  • And that shootout move? Sick./
