Friday’s Dump & Chase: Beard of Zeus and Mustache of Forsberg

A new year is upon us…finally. I (Shaun) haven’t looked forward to a new year this much since 1999 when I had EVERYTHING prepped and ready in my fallout shelter to weather the storm of Y2K. Little did I know those survival skills would come in much handier in Y2K20.

Here are some links Kate gathered, as well as some from me. Use the comments section to wish everyone a Happy New Year and SHARE YOUR WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR! We have a lot to be hopeful for, so share them here!

Three Stars from Day 6 of WJC: Stuetzle, Amirov shine in historic wins | Sportsnet.ca
Good to see Germany bouncing back from the nightmare that was having to play without even being able to dress a full lineup. Poor kids.

Where the Blue Jackets are at in their quest to join the elites | ProHockeyTalk
Ominous news for the Predators, who are about to be seeing a lot of them.

I (Kate) joked at some point this offseason that there’s an article in the idea that CBJ (eliminated in 2017 by the Cup-winning Penguins, 2018 by the Cup-winning Capitals, 2019 by the Prince-of-Wales-Trophy-winning Bruins, and 2020 by the Cup-winning Lightning) was no worse than the third-best NHL team of the last four years. My counterpart from the Cannon’s response was something like “That, but not a joke.”

Devils’ Nico Hischier will miss the start of training camp | ProHockeyTalk
I just aged ten years seeing Hischier described in this article as “the fourth-year center.” Hopefully he recovers fully from his injury soon–and hopefully the Devils don’t suffer too badly for it–but also, yikes, fourth year. I’m not ready to be old.

Why the NWHL and PWHPA getting serious about analytics is important | The Ice Garden
Former Team USA captain Meghan Duggan, quoted in the article, makes some great points about the cons as well as the pros of analytics. I’m not sure that being able to explain something makes it less incredible, especially when sometimes the explanation really is just “pure luck” or “I have no idea how they managed to pull that off”, but I feel like I understand the objections better now.

Göteborg has their first win of the season in their, uh, 23rd attempt. Better late than never?
