Golden Games: Rinne Spoils Ladd Trade vs. Regular Season Willy

The summer heat is on.

Here’s another match-up of the Golden Games, a silly contest where we vote on game performances from last year to see which was the best. Click here for the full details, as well as the overall bracket. (Note: the bracket will be updated as the polls close, so check back for progress).

Today’s match-up features arguably the two best regular season performances from players who had rather disappointing regular seasons.

#3 Pekka Rinne (2/25/16 @ CHI)

On the day after the Blackhawks acquired Andrew Ladd, Pekka Rinne played spoiler, dominating the net in the United Center. Rinne stopped 38 of 39 shots, including 10 saves in the 3rd period to preserve a 3-1 win for the Predators. The Blackhawks maintained a +16 Corsi differential over the Preds, but Rinne remained steady in net for one of his more impressive performances of the regular season.

His best save came in the 1st period, where he stopped Jonathan Toews point blank on a 2-on-1. Check it out below.

#6 Colin Wilson (12/21/15 vs. MON)

By this point in late December, Colin Wilson had exactly one goal in 28 games. The jokes were pouring in. But on December 21st, Wilson poured on some points against the Canadiens. His three points in the 3rd period helped bury Montreal in a convincing 5-1 win.

Check out Willy’s tape-to-tape assist on Calle Jarnkrok’s goal below. His hands and vision were on display on this night for sure.
