Game Recaps

January 31 @ Chicago Wolves

Fourteen goals in two games can force tough decisions on which players to highlight, but this 7-3 effort was led almost entirely by the Admirals’ veterans. Cole Schneider, Daniel Carr and Frederick Gaudreau combined for five goals and seven assists in this one and a perfect power play effort helped ice things against Chicago.

February 1 @ Rockford IceHogs

Milwaukee iced a dominant effort for the second night in a row jumping out to an early lead courtesy of Eeli Tolvanen just 1:31 in. Rem Pitlick and Daniel Carr added two more before the halfway point of the first period, too.

The Admirals peppered the IceHogs in the final two frames adding four more goals, converting on four of six power plays and launching 48 shots Rockford’s way.

Players of the Week

Tommy Novak (F): Novak has been reunited as the center between Daniel Carr and Cole Schneider and his production immediately benefited. The AHL rookie has 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists) in his last four games which includes a four-assist performance on Saturday against Rockford.

Novak has been an excellent addition on the power play and at even strength recording a primary point on 62.96% of the even-strength goals he’s been on the ice for. He now sits tied for seventh in rookie scoring league-wide with 30 points in 44 games. [ED]

Eeli Tolvanen (F): One of the biggest difference I spot with Tolvanen is that he’s capitalizing on his chances. He’s burying pucks when the puck is turned over to him and he’s consistently pressuring below the circles instead of waiting along the perimeter or in the high slot.

Tolvanen had three goals and one assist this past weekend and nine points in his last eight contests. With 24 points in 47 games, he’s now just three goals shy of topping his 2018-19 total and is seventh league-wide in scoring among U21 forwards. [RK]

Musings

In a few weeks, the Milwaukee Admirals will retire #20 on behalf of forward Darren Haydar who skated for the club from 2002 to 2006. At the AHL All-Star Classic this year in Ontario, CA, Haydar was enshrined into the AHL Hall of Fame for his accomplishments across 774 regular season games.

If you aren’t familiar with Haydar, you may be surprised at where his accomplishments rank in AHL history. He scored 788 points across those 774 regular season games that was highlighted by the 2006-07 season where he notched 122 points in just 73 contests for the Chicago Wolves.

Nashville’s ninth-round pick in 1999 helped the Admirals to their 2004 Calder Cup victory with 26 points in 22 games that Spring and sits 14th on the league’s all-time points list. His 122-point season is tied for the seventh-best in league history, and he’s one of just eight players to record 100+ points in a season after the year 2000 (six if you exclude the 2004-05 campaign that was dominated by NHL talent like Jason Spezza and Mike Cammalleri).

Musings and Observations, courtesy of Rachel and Eric:

  • Daniel Carr and Cole Schneider lead the Admirals in scoring despite playing just the 14th and 15th most games on the roster. The duo has combined for 15 goals and 21 assists in their last 25 games
  • Connor Ingram has now saved a staggering 17.785 goals above average which is so impressive it makes Grosenick’s mark of 10.890 look just okay
  • Steven Santini seemed to have a better weekend when it came to decision making. Regardless, he’s recorded a primary point on just 11.9% of the even-strength goals he’s on ice for (42 in total)
  • The forward lines have settled into a near-constant state: Carr/Novak/Schneider…Richard/McCarron/Gaudreau…Tolvanen/Pitlick/Salomaki…Olivier/Wilkins/Jeannot
  • There are four impressive units but the fourth line has struggled to produce much offensively as those three have combined for just 144 shots on goal/
