Nashville Predators 3, Edmonton Oilers 8: Unconditional Surrender.

The Nashville Predators squared off against the Edmonton Oilers in Nashville on Monday night. The Predators were coming off of a stinging home loss on Saturday night that saw a game with a solid team effort canceled in the waning minutes of the third period when a phantom goaltender interference call against Colin Blackwell stopped a thunderclap from the blue line by Dante Fabbro from ever being called a goal.

The Predators were in a very tight race for a wildcard spot with just about every other team in the Pacific and the Central Division and looking for a win to solidify their place in the postseason. The Oilers sat in second place in the Pacific, but a few losses combined with key wins by other Pacific Division teams would topple them into the wild card hunt as well. Pekka Rinne and Mike Smith started in net for both teams.

What Happened

  • The military warm-up jerseys look SWEET!
  • Incredible puck drop as members of the 101st Airborne do an inverted rappel down from the rafters!/

  • Oh, PEKKA RINNE is in net tonight!
  • Mikael Granlund sent a drop pass to Kyle Turris that turned into a nasty shot that had to be sticked away by Mike Smith.
  • The Predators can enter the zone with ease, but seem to be tripped up once they enter.
  • Josh Archibald, lurking in front of the crease, pops a pass from Tyler Ennis into the net by Rinne, making it 1-0 Edmonton early./

  • Colton Sissons almost had a quick and nasty revenge goal.
  • Tyler Ennis finds his way to the penalty box for tripping and the Predators will find their way to the power play.
  • Remember when the Predators used to have passing practice during the power play and everybody complained that they didn’t shoot the puck? I’d take that back over the power play I just witnessed.
  • I’m only seeing fire from the Predators in the offensive zone. It’s not a good look.
  • Ethan Bear, whose facial hair content does not match his last name, heads to the box for holding and the Predators are back on the power play…and I really hope it looks better than the last one.
  • Meanwhile, Preds twitter isn’t very happy with Jarred Tinordi’s role in the Edmonton goal:/

  • 50 seconds into the power play and this doesn’t look like the same team I saw on Saturday  or Thursday.
  • Matt Duchene just pulled a Craig Smith and missed a wide open net.
  • Well, the power play ended with one incredibly solid chance (the one I just mentioned).
  • Leon Draisaitl fired a rocket through Pekka Rinne’s arm and ribs for goal and puts the Oilers up 2-0./

  • At the end of the first period, the Oilers are clearly in the driver’s seat. Let’s hope the Predators can find whatever’s missing while they’re in the locker room.
  • Let’s see how this second period looks:
  • I enjoy how Mattias Ekholm shoved Draisaitl to the ice and took the puck. That’s what I want to see out of Mattias Ekholm—full angry Viking.
  • Roman Josi with a LASER from the blue line puts the Predators on the board and back within one. Oilers are still up 2-1./

  • Wasting literally no time, Calle Jarnkrok finds himself alone with the puck on the back doorstep of Mike Smith’s house and slams it home. TIE GAME! Deafening roars from the fans in Bridgestone Arena as the Oilers call time out. /

  • Play is getting a little chippy after those 14 seconds of glory.
  • That was also a very strange shift from Viktor Arvidsson.
  • This appears to be a different team…not sure where they were in the first period?
  • BIG TIME TEAM EFFORT STOP!
  • And now big hits from Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene…where was this?
  • Adam Larsson just took some major liberties with Mikael Granlund during what should have been an interference call.
  • And, as a result of the ensuing zone entry, Kailer Yamamoto takes advantage of a chance in front of Rinne and makes it 3-2 Oilers. /

  • It didn’t take long for Nick Bonino to even things up at 3 as he found a juicy rebound in front of Mike Smith and found twine. Mike Smith flopped like a soccer player after the goal…not really sure why?/

  • Maybe that’s why./

  • Connor McDavid and Jarred Tinordi collide unintentionally. McDavid heads to the bench slamming the door and throwing a mighty tantrum.
  • The second period ends and the Predators have 3, the Oilers have 3, and Connor McDavid is probably sitting in the time out chair for that fit he threw./

  • A little third period action underway, interested to see which team comes out of the locker room for it.
  • Pekka Rinne stop a chance up close from Draisaitl. Clutch.
  • So far, the third period is pretty low-energy.
  • Ryan Johansen had a great chance in front of the net ruined by a host of Oilers.
  • And all that low energy leads to a goal for Connor McDavid, putting Edmonton up 4-3 with 15 minutes to play./

  • Aaaaaand, about 20 seconds later, Leon Draisaitl takes advantage to make it 5-3./

  • Add Zack Kassian to the list of goal scorers, because that’s pretty much the third period game. 6-3 Edmonton./

  • Leon Draisaitl scores a hat trick at will. 7-3. One hat hits the ice. /

  • And Juuse wept…
  • And now Mattias Ekholm is in the penalty box for hooking.
  • John Hynes stands behind the bench with no visible emotion. /

Leon Draisaitl, you won’t believe this, scores again. 8-3. Oilers.

  • Mercifully, Pekka Rinne has reached his eight-goal maximum and heads to the locker room. Juuse Saros vows to avenge him. Blood oaths are made immediately before he takes the ice.
  • Well, the time is ticking by quicker than the goals are counting up. So, I’ll take it.
  • Game, 8-3 Oilers./
