Nashville Predators 4, Winnipeg Jets 3: Scoring frenzy finally ends in Nashville’s favor

This one was worth the price of admission, although it may not have been good for your blood pressure. The Nashville Predators and the Winnipeg Jets locked horns in an epic battle, the loser of which would be banished to last place in the division.

Nashville looked to be in control of the game, until the Jets roared back for two goals in 27 seconds to tie the game. That didn’t last very long, as just 43 second into the third period, the Predators regained the lead on the power play. It was a lead they technically had to take twice, as the first attempt was waved off due to goaltender interference, but that marker would stand as the game winner.

Random Observations

  • Holy moly, Seth Jones. Not many 19-year-olds are going to carry the puck through almost an entire defense and behind the net to score. That goal doesn’t happen if he opts to dump the puck in, instead.
  • The second goal was as pretty of a goal as you are likely to see all season. It started 190 away from where it ended, and turned into a passing clinic. That’s something that doesn’t happen very often with this team. What’s even cooler than that? Roman Josi was the play to get the rush started, and with five perfect passes every Predator on the ice touched the puck at least once before it came back to Josi for the goal.
  • It looked like the Predators took control of the game when Nick Spaling scored his 10th of the season. However, Nashville likes to give away momentum as soon as they get it, and barely a minute-and-a-half later the Jets had scored two goals to tied the game. That’s not how you hockey, boys.
  • Another thing Nashville likes to do of late is get goals waved off. After two goals against Calgary, the potential go-ahead PPG was waved off due to goaltender interference. On the telecast, Stu Grimson was adamant that David Legwand was pushed into Ondrej Pavalec by Mark Stuart. There was contact there for sure, but Legwand went into the goaltender all by himself. I agreed with the call (even though I didn’t want to) but luckily the Predators were able to strike for real, just seconds later. That’s how you do it.
  • A bit of bad news was Shea Weber leaving the game just after that power play goal. It looked like his injury came from the shot that set the tally into motion, but it’s impossible to tell how serious this could be. With the team not playing again until Friday, he’ll hopefully have enough time to rest up.
  • Congratulations are in order for Colton Sissons, who scored his first NHL point during his first NHL game tonight with an assist on the Nick Spaling goal. Sissions had two shots in 10:49 of ice time tonight.

The Predators are now tied for points (56) with the Dallas Stars, who have played two less games. The Wild Card is only 6 points out of reach, but the quality of opponents coming up will make you want to hide under your bed. We’ll just take it one game at a time.
