Nashville Predators 5, Arizona Coyotes 1: The Power Play Scores!

The Preds continued the road trip with a successful trip into Arizona tonight. It looked as if the Coyotes were going to put up a fight all night with an early goal by Antoine Vermette. But the Predators responded quick and fast, including a power play goal.

Mike Fisher, James Neal, and Ryan Ellis all scored in the first period after the early Arizona goal. The second passed by without a goal scored, and then in the third Nashville tacked on goals by Gabriel Bourque and Olli Jokinen. The Coyotes were unable to get anything else going the rest of the game. The end up dropping this game, and Nashville picks up another two points on the road.

Random Observations

  • Horrible special teams seems to be a consistent story line with the Preds this season, This time it was the Nashville penalty kill that failed them. Vermette beat Rinne on a wrister, and all 2500 of their fans celebrated.
  • A POWER PLAY GOAL!!! We finally got one guys. And it is great to see that it was Mike Fisher’s first of the year. I’m not saying we are psychics here, but you can refer to the second tweet down below. Called it…
  • The power play was over on Neal’s goal, but can we just act like it happened with the man advantage? On a side note, it is nice to see Neal get going again. Sometimes all you need as a player is to just see the puck go into the net. Maybe that empty netter the other night was what he needed.
  • A slightly slow start tonight didn’t faze the Preds. Ellis helped pour it on in the first period of the game. Not to mention that Neal and Fisher both had two points in the first period alone.
  • The Predators were trying to let the Coyotes back in the game early in the third period. They were swarming and it looked like they were going to score any minute. Luckily for us, Bourque bailed us out with a timely goal. The goal was well deserved too. Jarnkrok had been busting his butt the entire game. It was only a matter of time before his line put one in the net.
  • Rough night for Mike Smith. He looked like he never got comfortable out there. The Predators jumped on him early, and it got to him. Smith never really bounced back after the three quick goals in the first period.
  • The Predators have now scored eight goals in the last two games, granted, two of those were ENGs. It’s good to see the offense starting to click on the road. December is only getting tougher, so Nashville needs to make sure they get points when they are “supposed” to.
  • Enough can’t be said about how well Pekka Rinne has played this season. After giving up an early goal tonight, he bounced back, settled down, and had a masterful game. Rinne didn’t have to make too many flashy saves tonight, but anytime you are facing thirty plus shots in a night, you better be on your A-game.
  • I’m guessing the Predators are using the baby steps technique with the power play. They scored one on the man advantage and apparently that was good enough for them not to score on the 5-on-3 late in the third. I guess we can’t get too greedy.

OTF’s Super Duper Stars of the Game

  • Mike Fisher: Not only does he score his first goal of the season, but he scored it on the power play! And I was worried about where he would fit in on this team.
  • James Neal: He should have had a power play goal for Nashville, but it was just a tad late. Nonetheless, he is starting to find the back of the net again.
  • Olli Jokinen: Hair, waffles, goals. That is Olli Jokinen./
