Nashville Predators 2, Calgary Flames 3: Burned In a Shootout

The quest for 82-0-0 is officially over. Nashville lost a tough one tonight, but they still came away with a point. The Predators came out slow and paid for it. Calgary jumped out in front on two separate occasions. Nashville played catch up and were able to tie it up. They had some great opportunities in overtime, but just weren’t able to bury one. With this one in the books, 81-0-1 is still a possibility!

Random Observations

  • First of all, I have been forced to watch tonight’s game with Calgary announcer. The more I see different team’s broadcasting teams, the more I realize how lucky we are to be graced with Pete Weber night in and night out.
  • With the first 5 minutes of the first period gone, the Preds are looking flat. No rhythm what so ever to their game so far.
  • Man that power play was bad. I mean real bad. It looks like it might be a long game..
  • There it is! #PrinceFilip with his first goal of the year. The Smith-Roy-Forsberg line has been playing lights out since the beginning of the season. And what a great pass by Derek Roy! Both Forsberg and Roy both have a 3 game point streak going now.
  • Well, that was quick. Flames tie it up on a deflected shot off of Anton Volchenkov. That goal was officially 1:15 after the Preds scored.
  • Eric Nystrom is playing like a 40-goal scorer out there. He is winning the races to the puck and making smart decisions. Deservedly so though, I mean he is on pace for 82 goals this season.
  • Nashville definitely came on after the first goal. After seeing the first 2 games, I expect them to come out swinging in the next period.
  • Preds are coming out firing in the second. There has to be a goal coming soon. They are just swarming right now.
  • And there goes that momentum. Giordano scores on the poweplay to give the Flames the lead.
  • Great shift to follow up by Bourque-Jarnkrok-Jokinen. Bourque looks like he feels a lot more comfortable being on the third line than the first.
  • This is a completely different team we are seeing right now. There are glimpses of great play, but for the most part, it has been sloppy and shaky. I’m not going to jump the gun on this one though. Considering their third period play so far this season, I have full faith that this team will be able to get something going.
  • Yes! Mike Ribeiro with his first of the season. Colin Wilson has been playing great on the first line tonight. I’m sure Peter Laviolette preached patience to the first line, and it finally paid off.
  • Gabriel Bourque almost got another one at the end of the second. That would have hurt Calgary right before the intermission.
  • Man these Calgary intermission analysts are giving the Preds some love right now. Not used to other people outside of Nashville praising the team this year. I guess that is what a 2-0 start will do for you.
  • Ramo is standing on his head right now making these saves. If Calgary wins this game, it is all because oh his play in the third.
  • Rinne is also playing well this period. He doesn’t have the highlight reel saves, but he has timely saves.
  • And we’re heading to overtime. Nice to get the point, but I expect them to pick up the extra point when it’s all said and done.
  • Jarnkrok has to make up his mind faster than that. Either shoot or pass. Don’t let the defender go down to the ice.
  • Shootouts always make me nervous. It’s essentially a crap shoot on who gets the win.
  • Well that does it. Roy, Neal, and Jokinen all get stopped on their shots. Makes you think if Laviolette should have put Forsberg out there. The Preds end up getting a point out of this one.

OTF’s Super Duper Stars of the Game

  1. Filip Forsberg. He finally gets his first goal and created some great opportunities.
  2. Another first time goal scorer this season, Mike Ribeiro. The first line was playing so well, that someone on that line was due a goal.
  3. Colin Wilson. This guy played great tonight. He set up Ribeiro on his goal, and created chaos in the offensive zone. It looked like he meshed well with Neal and Ribeiro.

Tweet Of The Night

This tweet occurred half way through the second period. With all the talk of advanced stats going on lately, I thought this was too good not to share.
