Nashville Predators 4, Colorado Avalanche 5: Team tries to rally for Dubnyk, but a dreadful first period dooms them all.

The Nashville Predators came back from a quick road game to host the Colorado Avalanche. The Preds, winners of two straight, were trying to stock some points to attempt to climb back into the division race.

However, another three goals allowed in the first period doomed the team despite a furious finish. Nick Holden, Jan Hejda, and Gabriel Landeskog all scored before 20 minutes were done, and it would be all the Avalanche needed to secure their two points. Craig Smith, Ryan Ellis, and Roman Josi did their best to force overtime, but it wasn’t enough tonight.

Random Observations

  • Coming into this game, Devan Dubnyk was 8-4-1 against the Avalanche with a .941 SV% and 2.03 GAA. Pretty sparkling numbers, but unfortunately tonight was just not his night.
  • Don’t let this one performance cement any final thoughts of Dubnyk in net. It would have been great for him to post a shutout his first time out, but it wasn’t meant to be.
  • Patric Hornqvist and Craig Smith are pretty good, aren’t they? Smith potted his team-leading 15th of the season and Hornqvist finally hit double digits in goals.
  • Roman Josi tied his career high in goals tonight with 5. After scoring the shootout winner on Thursday, Josi is having quite a stretch of games recently. Let’s keep him.

It’s games like this that have defined the season. Crap to start and glorious to finish. If only they played like that all the time, you say. If only they played like that all the time they would be so much high in the standings. I say the same thing, and I have nothing to tell you that will give you comfort. Hopefully they can get it together when another division rival, Dallas, comes to town on Monday.
