Nashville selects Anton Olsson 72nd overall in round three

On day two of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the Nashville Predators made another trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, moving picks 83 and 147 to trade up to 72nd overall. With that pick, Nashville selected defender Anton Olsson.

Ranked 51st on my final draft board, Olsson is a 6’0” Swedish defender who appeared in 39 games for Malmö of the SHL this year (on top of seven games at the J20 Nationell level).

Olsson has displayed solid defensive instincts playing professional minutes at 18 years old. His pivot timing is usually solid and he utilizes his active stick effectively. He can move quickly under pressure but hasn’t displayed a knack for leading transition with his feet yet. His outlet passes, when consistent, are a strength.

Four assists in 39 games tells you much of what you need to know about his offensive game—even as he averaged just over 11 minutes of ice time per night.
