Nashville Predators News: Preds trade 7th round pick to Washington for Jaynen Rissling

The Nashville Predators made their first trade of the off-season today, sending their 7th-round draft this summer to the Washington Capitals to acquire defenseman Jaynen Rissling. Here’s an assessment from Talk the Red of his game:

His biggest strength is using that size to his advantage as he loves to throw his body around and often drops the gloves as he leads the Hitmen in penalty minutes regularly. His character, leadership and overall tenacity are what he contributes most to his team but has recently picked up a pretty solid offensive game.

Much of that enthusiasm should be tempered, however, as Rissling stuck with his junior team (the Calgary Hitmen) as a 20-year-old this season, and was thus playing against younger competition. This move could pay off, however, even if Rissling only plays a “muscle” role in Milwaukee for the next few seasons.

The Preds’ release follows:

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Jaynen Rissling from the Washington Capitals in exchange for Nashville’s seventh-round selection in the 2014 Entry Draft.

Rissling, 20 (9/21/93), recently completed his fifth season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League, posting 37 points (8g-29a) and 105 penalty minutes in 54 games while serving as team captain. In 273 WHL games from 2009-14, the 6-4, 204-pound native of Edmonton, Alta., amassed 117 points (23g-94a) and 465 penalty minutes, helping the Hitmen claim the WHL title and participate in the Memorial Cup in 2010.

Washington’s ninth choice, 197th overall (seventh round) in the 2012 Entry Draft, Rissling becomes the second member of the Capitals 2012 draft class to be acquired by the Predators, joining Filip Forsberg (11th overall, first round).
