Nashville Selects Forward Egor Afanasyev 45th Overall

After a blockbuster deal that sent defender P.K. Subban to the New Jersey Devils, Nashville came up with the 34th overall pick today as part of their return. After missing on Arthur Kaliyev, who went 33rd to the Los Angeles Kings, Nashville moved the pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for the 45th and 65th pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

With the 45th pick, the Nashville Predators selected forward Egor, or Yegor, Afanasyev from the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL. The 6’4” winger scored 27 goals and 62 points in 58 games for the Lumberjacks this season and will play in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires next season.

Afanasyev was ranked 16th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and came in at 34th in my ranks of all skaters. Here’s what I noted:

“Afanasyev reminds me a bit of Kirby Dach with his stickhandling abilities, despite a larger frame. He’s a good, accurate shooter who is slowly improving his all-around game.”

The Russian winger led the Lumberjacks in scoring this season and was tenth in the entire USHL. He’s an impressively fit player with a large frame and good puck protection skills. Afanasyev recently announced he will play for the Windsor Spitfires next season of the OHL.
