Sunday’s Dump & Chase: Magic and Tragic

Recap: Nashville Predators 1, Dallas Stars 0 (OT): Saros perfect, Haula scores in brutal win | On the Forecheck
I hit publish on my recap, walked away from my computer, and lay down under a heating pad on my neck and shoulders to try to relax the muscles that had tensed up from watching this game. It didn’t really work. I’m going to wake up in so much pain today, but at least they got the win.

Shock and disappointment: Kacey Bellamy recounts Worlds cancellation | The Ice Garden
The women haven’t been able to play, but the IIHF has managed to find a way for the men’s U20 and U18 (boys’ U18?) to go ahead. Bellamy discusses the scheduling issues for a summer tournament–this was before the dates were officially announced, but the question was already floating around–and how it will negatively impact players for the Olympics. Just a mess from start to finish.

Maple Leafs’ Matthews continues ‘unbelievable’ season with wingman Marner | Sportsnet.ca
I was all set to pass this as an interesting article, and then I got to “The last player to win the Rocket with 66 goals is no one. Not even close. The award wasn’t invented when superstars were lighting lamps at Matthews’ current pace.”

Alex Ovechkin won it with 65 in 2008, but I guess…one goal short?…is, uh, “not even close”–at least if what you’re measuring is the distance between the home arena of the team he played for and the physical location of the Hockey Hall of Fame. (Steven Stamkos won it with 60 in 2012, which is, of course, even further away in both senses.)
