As is discussed here, the NHL’s Declaration of Principles is actually a really great set of aspirations. Hockey should be for everybody; it will be a better and more profitable sport when it is. It isn’t just that fans who feel welcomed are more likely to spend money and introduce new people to the game–it’s that incredibly gifted athletes who feel welcomed are less likely to quit, or worse.
But we’re not there just yet.
